Expect the unexpected has always been a favorite motto of mine. When it comes to tween girls having their period, it can certainly be unexpected at times. Girls are starting their period as early as age eight, so it might be time to start thinking about having that period talk. In addition to that first talk, there are some monthly maintenance tips we moms and grandmas can share with our tween girls to help them be better prepared.
It’s not unusual for periods to be irregular, especially in the beginning. I remember always feeling so worried at school that I would start mine unexpectedly and bleed through my clothes. I don’t want my girls to have this fear, so there are a few things we’ve done to help them be better prepared for their periods.
Although they can still be irregular, we’ve found that keeping track of their periods on the calendar is very helpful. That way they’ll be sure to watch out for symptoms and have plenty of pads on hand. Speaking of period symptoms, learning to deal with the moodiness, sadness and discomfort that comes with periods can be difficult. I give them lots of encouragement and assure them that what they are feeling is normal. I also make sure that there is plenty of pain relief available in the medicine cabinet.
Period Talk
Another thing that we’ve discussed many times is the importance to change their pads often, to avoid both odor and leakage. The girls are so busy with school, cheerleading, and 4H activities. It’s so easy for them to lose track of time. There’s probably nothing more embarrassing than having a noticeable odor while on your period. It’s important that my granddaughters know they need to be extra diligent in practicing good hygiene while on their period.
Just in case that accident or the unexpected should occur, they have an emergency period kit which includes extra Kotex pads, clean underwear, wet wipes and a few other items that they might need. A kit like this can easily be kept in a school locker or backpack.

My 13 year old just started in the last year – but to get her prepared we put together a similar “emergency kit”… I included items she would need for any situation, including pads and liners. It helped her to not feel so uncomfortable about it!
