KidsLiveWell-ChickenSandwich

Back in February when I visited Applebee's Headquarters in Kansas City for the first Applebee's Blogger Summit, there was some exciting chatter about Applebee's teaming up with Kids LiveWell this summer. This morning, at the National Restaurant Show in Chicago, Applebee's announced the company is officially joining the Kids LiveWell program. If you aren't familiar with the Kids LiveWell program, it's a program that helps parents and kids make more healthful menu selections when eating out. Kids LiveWell items must meet qualifying nutritional standards from leading health organizations, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The program … [Read more...]

Do You Know If Your Child Has Strong Bones?

Do you know if your child has strong bones? This question has had me doing a lot of thinking recently about my family's diet and health, in particular their bone health. I had the opportunity to write a guest post on this topic over at Jen and Barb, Mom Life which is a site dedicated to sharing original online videos all about being in the trenches of motherhood. The topic this week is bone health and whether or not your child is getting enough calcium in their diet. Check out this great video where Jen and Barb discuss the ABC's of bone health with bone health expert and author Dr. Diane L. Schneider. Baby Etiquette Tips to Prevent the Spread of RSV

Mother kissing newborn

I became a mom at a very young age. I think my own insecurities made me overly protective of my baby. Looking back, maybe I wasn't being overly protective after all. There are some real threats to young infants, who are very susceptible to infection in the early weeks of their lives. Contracting something as simple as the common cold can pose a real danger for young babies. One of the biggest threats to new babies is a very common virus called respiratory syncytial virus, also known as RSV. I wasn't aware of this dangerous virus when I had an infant at home, but knowing this am really glad that I was so cautious. RSV is of great concern because it spreads very easily. The virus can … [Read more...]

All Natural: Tom’s of Maine Silly Strawberry Toothpaste

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Tom's of Maine for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine. I honestly had never considered using an all natural toothpaste, before receiving a tube of Tom's of Maine Anticavity Silly Strawberry Toothpaste to review. I purchase all natural products whenever possible, but toothpaste was not on my radar. I was very curious to learn what makes Tom's of Maine toothpaste different from all the others. Tom's of Maine toothpaste contains no artificial dyes or sweeteners. Silly Strawberry toothpaste has real strawberry flavor derived from strawberry extracts and other natural flavors. It's the first and only all natural kids toothpaste to … [Read more...]

Why Use Cloth Diapers?

Guest post written by Cristina of Tailor Made Momma.  I'm not a perfect mom but I was Tailor Made Just right for my kids.  Follow me on Facebook and Twitter and share in the cloth diapers, babywearing fun! If you would have asked me 6 years ago when my oldest son was born if I was going to use cloth diapers I probably would have laughed in your face!  Back then, my only opinion of cloth diapers was that they were those Gerber Prefolds that I use for burp rags that you put on with pins and cover up with some plastic underwear!  If only I had known then just how wrong I was, and how much money it would have saved me! When I was pregnant with my third child in 2010, one of my … [Read more...]

Affordable Dental Plans

I used to have great dental coverage through my employer. Now that I am on Medicare, I no longer have dental insurance. I hate to admit it, but I have been putting off going to the dentist because of the cost and am quite overdue. I always thought that purchasing a dental plan was outside of my reach. After all, most insurance plans are very expensive. Recently, I learned of the site www.dentalplans.com which helps you locate affordable dental insurance in your area. I was not expecting to find much available to me since I live in such a rural area, but I was surprised by the long list of affordable dental plans that are available to me. All I had to do was plug in my zip code to get a … [Read more...]

How Much Halloween Candy Should I Let My Kids Eat?

assorted-halloween-candy

Now that Trick or Treating is over, it is time to think about what to do with all of that Halloween candy. I remember coming home with a pillow case full of candy, as a kid. Who could possibly eat that much candy? We didn’t. Of course, on Halloween night we gorged ourselves but eventually the candy lost its appeal and we were happy to let mom stash the rest away.I don’t necessarily agree with the idea of offering a few pieces each night or making it a special treat. When you restrict a food, kids view it as more desirable and making it a special treat only makes it more appealing. It matters which candy your child eats. Did you know that some candy holds more nutritional value than … [Read more...]

Nowadays he will try anything. Here is what worked for our family:1.When serving a new food that your kid is afraid to try, tell the child that they need to try a few bites. We tell Logan that he has to eat more than just one, because it's hard to tell if you really like something just … [Read more...]

Baby Sign Language

Babies are born ready to communicate with us. A baby’s motor skills are developed  during months 6 – 12, while vocal cords are not developed until months 9 – 15. A baby is able to push, pull and grab months before intelligible, intentional words are spoken. These early motor skills enable your baby to learn to sign months before he is able to speak. Why would you want your baby to sign? Babies get frustrated by wanting something but not being able to communicate his needs, resulting in fussiness. Wouldn’t it be great if your baby could sign when he is hungry, thirsty or needs a diaper change? Research confirms that signing babies have fewer temper … [Read more...]
