Ease Back Into the School Year Routine

We become so carefree during the summer. Family routines tend to slide – bedtime and mealtimes vary and swimsuits are worn for days on end. As the school year approaches, it’s important to ease back into the school year routine.

It’s time for bed. One to two weeks before the first day of school, it’s important to ease into school bedtime. Practicing school bedtime for a week should be enough to establish a routine.

The morning rush. Equally as important as a bedtime routine, is your morning wake-up schedule. Let your kids get use to waking earlier in the morning, at the time you have established for the school year. Rushing around in the morning before school can be very upsetting for your child, so be sure you have allowed enough time to wake up and prepare for the day. When we are too much of a rush, it is easy for things like lunch boxes and back packs to get left behind.

Don’t forget mealtimes. Let your children adapt to new meal routines before the school day demands it of them. Especially for younger children, it is important to get use to having breakfast and lunch on a schedule that is similar to a school day.

Talk about it. Help your kids get emotionally ready before school. Talk about what to expect from the upcoming school year. Discuss any fears or concerns your child may have. Reassure your child that you are there to help whenever it is needed. It will be much easier for you child to transition into school knowing that you are there to help. Remember not to make going back-to-school too much of a big deal. It’s important to prepare, just don’t go overboard.

With just a few changes you can help your child ease back into the school year routine.
