Green Holiday Gift Idea | Grow-Your-Own Mushroom Kit from Back to the Roots

The Grow-Your-Own Mushroom Garden Kit is a wonderfully unique green holiday gift idea. Amaze your kids and delight your taste buds with this garden kit from Back to the Roots. The kit yields up to one and a half pounds of tasty pearl oyster mushrooms right out of the little brown box, and you can even harvest multiple crops.

This has to be the simplest grow-your-own garden kit that I have ever come across. It’s all contained within the cardboard box. There is no dirt or seeds to fuss with. The cardboard box itself is embedded with vegetable seeds. Recycled coffee grounds in the box act as soil. All you have to do is mist twice per day with the included mister, and keep indoors away from direct sunlight.

In as little as 10 days the first mushrooms will grown. The Grow-Your-Own Mushroom Garden is a great way to teach the kids about plant cycles and the important of sustainability, not to mention the delicious oyster mushrooms you’ll have to cook with. Oyster mushrooms are one of my favorite mushroom varieties, because of their mild flavor.

This mushroom garden keeps on giving – starting this fall the Grow-Your-Own Mushroom Garden Kit has a new feature. There are seeds embedded within the box itself so that once you are done growing mushrooms, you can sprout another garden with sweet onions, tomatoes and basil by simply planting the box.

I have one of these kits that I will be wrapping up and gifting to my own family, as a family Christmas gift. I’m so excited to watch the garden grow.

After you’ve grown your mushrooms, you can post a picture to the Back to the Roots Facebook page and they will donate a mushroom garden and sustainability curriculum to a classroom of your choice so more people can join the urban farming family! I’ll be sure to submit a photo once our garden has grown!

About Back to the Roots
Now full-time urban mushromm farmers, Alejandro Velez & Nikihil Arora first heard the idea of being able to potentially grow gourmet mushrooms on 100% recycled coffee grounds while in a class at UC Berkeley, during their last semester. They have since diverted and reused 1 million pounds of coffee grounds from the landfill, and have helped customers grow over 250,000 pounds of their own fresh mushrooms.

The Grow-Your-Own Mushroom Garden Kit is available from the Back to the Roots online store and is currently available for just $19.99.

Will you be having a Green Holiday?
