Homemade Pumpkin Baby Food

Pumpkins are full of some of the best nutritional compounds around. They are loaded with Vitamin A and beta carotene. Pumpkin is a great food to introduce to your baby starting at age 6 months. You may feed your baby plain pumpkin in a pureed form or mixed into homemade cereals.

Homemade Pumpkin Baby Food

While using canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) is fine, it is easy to cook and prepare fresh pumpkin which is plentiful this time of year. You’ll want to use sugar pumpkins for baby food.

Baking pumpkins will best ensure the most nutrients are retained for your baby. Be sure you cook the pumpkin immediately after cutting it open to prevent mold which sets in very quickly.

Instructions for baking pumpkin

  • Cut one sugar pumpkin in half, de-seed.
  • Place the halves face down in a baking pan with approximately 1 – 2 inches of water.
  • Bake between 375 – 425 degrees for approximately 40 minutes to 1 hour.
  • Skin should be wrinkled and pumpkin should feel soft when pressed.

1 sugar pumpkin (Cook according to directions above.)
Dash of cinnamon, nutmeg

Scrape out the pumpkin meat and then mash or puree. Add a dash of cinnamon and or nutmeg.<div >Use or chill immediately in a sealed container, in the freezer.

Apple, Pumpkin & Oatmeal Breakfast Cereal

½ cup applesauce
½ cup pumpkin puree
1 ½ cup cooked oatmeal
Dash of cinnamon, nutmeg
Mix spices, applesauce, pumpkin puree and oatmeal together. Stir until thoroughly blended.
Notes: When scooping out pumpkin, to avoid hard strings, scoop the insides out gently and not too closely to the shell. If your pumpkin has been baked long enough, the strings will easily fall away from the shell.
Ice cube trays are great for freezing pumpkin puree in perfect portions.
