Reading is Fun with Books from National Geographic Kids

If a child doesn’t enjoy reading, it’s so difficult to find books that will hold their interest. An avid reader myself, it pains me to hear my nieces Maddie and Becca say that they don’t like to read. As a girl I got so much pleasure from reading and spent many afternoons escaping into the worlds of Laura Ingalls, Anne of Green Gables or Nancy Drew. Fortunately, the girls have recently discovered that reading is fun with books from National Geographic Kids.

Reading is Fun with Books from National Geographic Kids - About A Mom

On my recent trip to BlogHer in NYC, I had the pleasure of having afternoon tea with some of the fabulous folks from National Geographic. It was a fun afternoon and a chance to learn more about National Geographic and their vision for NG Kids. I came home with some wonderful goodies including 3 super fun books for the kids. These books are so great that I just have to share them!

National Geographic Angry Birds Space

National Geographic Angry Birds Space: A Furious Flight Into the Final Frontier

It’s one small step for birds, one giant leap for birdkind…

Blast off with the Angry Birds as they fly through space on an intergalactic rescue mission! Evil space piggies have stolen their eggs and are hiding them somewhere in outer space. To save them, the Angry Birds have teamed up with National Geographic to learn all they can about planets, moons, stars, galaxies, and the mysteries of the universe. Four chapters take the readers deeper and deeper into space—each one packed with Angry Birds, astounding space photography, and fascinating “Astrofacts” and “Space Data” features that surprise and enthrall. Join the birds as they observe robots on Mars, take a spin with the Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, visit where stars are born in galaxies far, far away, and look for life on strange new worlds. This official companion book to the Angry Birds Space game shows the furious fliers everything they’ll need to know on their quest to explore the galaxy and rescue their precious eggs.

Who knew learning about space could be so much fun? This book is filled with beautiful space photography, along with lots of fun Angry Birds graphics. You don’t even realize that you are getting a great science lesson while reading this book. Each page has a fun and interesting ASTROFACT like this…“Jingle Bells” was the first son sent back from space, played on a harmonica by a crew member of Gemeni 6 in 1965. If your kids are Angry Birds fans like mine are, they will love this book! National Geographic Angry Birds Space by Amy Briggs is also the official companion to the Angry Birds Space Game.

National Geographic Kids Weird but True

National Geographic Kids Weird but True! 300 Outrageous Facts

At last, all those weird but true facts that readers of National Geographic Kids love so much are collected into a fun-filled book that you’ll come back to again and again!

Weird But True is based on the hugely popular magazine page of quirky, fun facts that many readers of National Geographic Kids magazine turn to first. Why? Well did you know that… Peanut butter can be converted into a diamond? The world’s oldest pet goldfish lived to be 43 years old? The world’s longest soap bubble was as long as four school buses? On Neptune, the wind blows up to 1,243 miles an hour? An elephant’s tooth can weigh as much as a bowling ball?

All of the facts in this handy book will amaze friends and family: Animals Superpowers…Chills and Thrills…Eat or Be Eaten…Mini and Mega…Wild and Crazy, and much, much more. Adjacent pages for such facts present a one-paragraph explanation of how that fact is possible or why it is so.

The kids love anything that is weird or gross, making Weird but True an instant hit with them. It’s really fun, because this is a book that they want to read out loud. Each fact is so outrageous that it just has to be shared. For example….

Did you know that owls can’t move their eye balls or that there are more plastic Flamingos in the U.S.A. than real ones (guilty as charged)? Or how about this one…

Did you know that a highway runs through the middle of an office building in Osaka, Japan? You’ve got to see the picture of that one!
