What is it about a road trip that makes us want to eat? My family goes on a lot of road trips and we’ve talked before about planning for a road trip. One of the most important things for us is to have on a road trip is good road trip snacks, so I think the topic is worthy of it’s own blog post. There are a couple of things that go into making a good road trip snack. It has to something that we don’t eat on a regular basis and it also has to travel well.

While I know it’s tempting to restrict beverages as an attempt to limit potty breaks, but it’s really important to stay well hydrated on a road trip. Water bottles are inexpensive and can easily be refilled when you make a pit stop. Water can get boring, so take along some of those powdered beverage flavorings to mix things up a bit.
- Pack a small cooler with some ice packs to store things like fresh fruit & veggie sticks, string cheese, and yogurts in a tube.
- Grape tomatoes are a healthy grab and go snack that are easy to munch on while you’re driving.
- Pop up some popcorn before leaving the house to put into single serve sandwich bags. Try sprinkling on some Cheddar cheese flavoring or your other favorite topping.
- Make your own trail mix, letting each of the kids choose an ingredient.
- Freeze some grapes the night before your trip. They will stay nice and cold in your cooler.
- If you’re leaving at the crack of dawn, these Oatmeal Breakfast Cookies would be a handy breakfast.
- These adorable Tackle Box Road Trip Snack Kits for Kids found at Dine and Dish are a genius idea!
My best advice is to try and keep it healthy. There’s nothing worse than being trapped in a car with a bunch of kids who are hyped up on sugar.
What are some of your favorite road trip snacks?
