Spicy Breakfast Skillet with El Yucateco Hot Sauce

On the weekends I like to make a big, hearty late morning breakfast. A breakfast skillet is one of my favorite dishes to prepare. Partly because most of the dish is cooked in one cast iron skillet, and also because just a few simple ingredients yield big flavor.

Last weekend I decided to spice things up a bit for my skillet breakfast, and headed to Publix for hot sauce and some other ingredients. Instead of my usual breakfast sausage, I picked up some Chorizo. Then I headed over to the International Foods aisle to check out the habanero sauces. I wanted some authentic flavor.

I snagged up all three flavors of El Yucateco Habanero Sauce. I wasn’t playing when I said I wanted to spice things up!

It was hard to choose just one, so I got the Red Habanero Sauce, Green Habanero Sauce, and XXXtra Hot Kutbil-ik Sauce. This was going to be one amazing breakfast!

In a 12-inch cast iron skillet or other large skillet, cook the chorizo until crumbly and cooked through. Remove from skillet with a slotted spoon and place on a plate covered with paper towels.

In the same pan saute the onion and red pepper until tender. Remove from skillet and set aside.

Add about 1 tablespoon olive oil to pan and cook the potatoes until browned and fork tender. Add the chorizo, onion, red pepper and eggs back to the skillet and stir to combine. Top with chopped parsley.

If it were up to me, I would add the hot sauce directly into the breakfast skillet, but not everyone in my family shares my appreciation for hot sauce. It was nice having the variety of hot sauces available, so that everyone could choose their favorite.

I have several bottles of this sauce in my cabinet, but hadn’t thought of using it in a breakfast dish. I am going to make this this weekend.

I’d have to douse this with ketchup but it looks awesome. I’d also add a sprinkle (or handfuls) of shredded cheddar cheese.

This is a great breakfast. I almost passed the recipe by because of the hot sauces. The kids would not like that, but then I noticed that you added yours after it was served. That would be perfect for my family.

One of my favorite spicy dishes is my pasta/sausage skillet dinner. I use hot sausage, along with red pepper flakes, it really is a great, easy dinner. I never thought of making a breakfast skillet dish, yours looks so yummy. Definitely going to give it a try! :)

This sounds like a great breakfast recipe but I would substitute a milder sauce as my stomach doesn’t like hot sauce.

I don’t know what chorizo is. Sometimes we make up a mixture like this using egg, cheese, sausage, onion and green peppers. Then we wrap it in a burrito shell. It’s tasty, but there is a bit of a mess to clean up.
