I feel like this book was written for people like me – the person who does not lose weight easily and has tried just about every diet out there. According to the author of “The Fast Metabolism Diet”, Haylie Pomroy, “This is not a book for first-time dieters. This is a book for last-time dieters.” I find myself clinging to these words desperate to lose weight and get healthy. All the many different types of diets out there – starvation diets, liquid diets, fad diets, carb free diets – I have tried them all and none have worked for me. Sure there have been times when I have successfully lost 10 or 20 pounds, but it never stayed off. Late last year I came to the realization that diets don’t work for me. Period. If I am ever to successfully lose weight, I need to stop thinking of eating healthy as a diet. Rather than deprive myself of food, I simply need to put the right foods into my body. That’s why I am feeling really good about The Fast Metabolism Diet – it doesn’t really seem like a diet. Rather, it’s a way to repair your metabolism and get your body working the way it should.

The Fast Metabolism Diet

I wish I could report that I followed this diet religiously for 28 days and have lost a lot of weight. The truth is that I received the book “The Fast Metabolism Diet” just a few weeks, and since receiving the book have been traveling a lot. In fact, I read the book while on a flight to San Francisco. Eating on the go and ordering room service made it difficult for me to dive in and start the 28 day process. What I have done is implement some of the Fast Metabolism Do’s and Don’ts into my eating habits, in preparation for when I begin the transformation process. Just these simple changes have already made a difference.

For example, I have been eating five times per day, and not going more than 3 to 4 hours between meals. This was a radical change for me, as someone who was in the terrible habit of surviving off coffee alone until dinner time and then gorging all evening. I have also been drinking a lot more water. The book recommends that you drink half your body weight in ounces of water every day. And I’ve been eating organic whenever possible. Since it’s important to follow the diet for the full 28 days, I plan to dive in when I return home from the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration later this month.

As someone who has been skeptical about diets in general for a while now, I am so impressed by what I have read in this book. I think it’s something that will really work for me. There are three different phases during the Fast Metabolism Diet. Each phase lasts 2 or 3 days. During each phase there are certain foods that you eat – all of them real foods, nothing processed or artificial. Here’s a bit about the 28 day program and it’s different phases:

Phase One – The first phase focuses on eating foods that are high glycemic, moderate protein, and low fat. This phase works to unwind stress and calm the adrenals. You will eat carbohydrate rich foods like quinoa and oatmeal, along with fruits and vegetables that are high in natural sugars, Vitamin B and Vitamin C. Notably absent are fats and dairy products during this phase. Also during phase one you are doing vigorous cardio workouts.

Phase Two – This second phase includes foods that are high protein, high vegetable, low carbohydrate, and low fat. You are eating foods that support liver function such as leafy greens, onions, and lemons. Absent during this phase are fruits and grains. Strength training with weights during this phase will ensure you do not lose any muscle.

Phase Three – The foods during phase three include healthy fat, moderate carbohydrate, moderate protein, and low glycemic fruit. Some of the allowed foods are nuts, olives, salmon, grapefruit, asparagus, and eggplant. Omitted during this phase are many proteins, grains, sweet fruits, and dairy. This phase is focused on your heart health. Yoga, deep breathing, and other stress relief focused exercise is encouraged during this phase.

Once you have completed phase three, you begin the process over again with phase one. This pattern is continued for 28 days. At the end of the program you will have not only increased your metabolism and lost weight, but will also improved your liver, heart and overall health.

It’s important to note that although some of these phases might seem a bit extreme, they only last for 2 to 3 days – making it very doable. The book also includes tips, ways to overcome obstacles and many wonderful recipes for each phase. To help you follow along with the book there is a free app available for iPhone, iPad/iPod Touch, and ios 5.0.

The Fast Metabolism Diet is a wake-up call for your body. It switches things up a bit by having you eat specific things and asks your body to do something difficult, although never for more than two or three days in a row. This strategy keeps your body working and surprised, essentially reboosting your metabolism. During 28 days your body will burn fat, build muscle, balance hormones, and lay the foundation for a healthier you.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and am eager to go through the process and give my metabolism a kick-start. The author, Haylie Pomroy, has impressive credentials and proven results with the Fast Metabolism Diet. The book “The Fast Metabolism Diet” is available to purchase from Amazon.
