The Secret World of Arrietty DVD/Blu-Ray Combo Pack Review & Giveaway

The Secret World of Arrietty debuts On 2-Disc Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD on May 22!

The Secret World of Arrietty arrived at our door this afternoon and straight into the DVD player it went. It was magical! Many of us at some point have dreamed of little people living amongst us. In Disney’s The Secret World of Arrietty, little people known as ‘borrowers’ really do exist. Fourteen year old Arrietty (voice of Bridgit Mendler) secretly lives with her parents (voices of Will Arnett and Amy Poehler) beneath the floorboards of a suburban garden home…that is until a twelve year old human boy named Shawn (voice of David Henrie) moves into the house with his Aunt and her housekeeper (voice of Carol Burnett). Shawn who has a bad heart, has moved into the house to rest as he awaits surgery.

Arrietty and her father are quite skilled at sneaking into the house and borrowing only what they need. Arriety’s mother made me laugh many times during the film, because she is an exaggerated version of a hovering, over-protective mother and is often in hysterics. Based on Mary Norton’s novel, The Borrowers, the Clock family has a lot at stake if their secret life is revealed.

The borrower’s world is turned upside down when Shawn discovers Arrietty and a secret friendship is forged. At one point it seems all is lost, when the housekeeper captures Arrietty’s mother and calls for the exterminators. There is much adventure as Shawn helps Arrietty rescue her mom.

The story is great, but I am most impressed by the animation of this film. It is hand drawn and breathtakingly beautiful with a 3D quality, making everything in the garden come to life. The character Shawn reminds me of the anime characters that my son loves to watch. The Secret World of Arrietty is a great family film and one that is sure to be watched over and over again in our home.

The film was directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi and produced by Toshio Suzuki. Gary Rydstrom directed the English-language version of The Secret World of Arrietty from a screenplay written by Karey Kirkpatrick. The producers include Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. The original Japanese screenplay was written by Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa.

The Secret World of Arrietty is available on DVD and Blu-ray May 22, 2012. Connect with the film on Facebook.
