Tips to Keep Kids Safe and Healthy During Halloween

While there isn’t anything that is unsafe about Halloween, kids are walking around, in the dark, going to strangers’ houses.  Not to mention, eating too much candy can have some adverse effects. Following these safety tips can help Halloween be a safe night and let everyone enjoy the fun.

1. Keep the Costume Safe

Halloween costumes make the night. It is important to make sure that the costumes are safe for kids.

  • Makeup not masks- Masks can obstruct your child’s view and make it difficult to breathe. Use makeup instead of having kids wear masks. Make sure the makeup and face paint is non-toxic. Make sure to do a test of the makeup on your child’s skin to check for allergic reactions.
  • Any hats being worn should be fitted to make sure it doesn’t slide off children’s eyes.
  • Keep costumes short- Long costumes can drag on the ground. This can cause a tripping hazard, especially at night. Make sure to purchase the correct size when getting the costume. If the costume is too long, hem the bottom to bring it up to a safe length.
  • Add reflective tape – Many costumes are not made with safety in mind. Add reflective tape to make it easier to see your child in the dark. If the tape will “ruin the look” of the costume, add reflective tape to shoes and to the Trick or Treat Bag.
  • Glow Sticks-  Another option besides reflective tape is glow sticks. Glow sticks can be worn as necklaces or bracelets and even anklets.

2. Bring a Flashlight

It is important to have  a flashlight. All of the kids and the escorts should have a flashlight to lead the way. Light up wands and glow in the dark jewelry will help light the way too. It can be hard to see while walking in the dark, even with streetlights. There could be obstacles in the way or the sidewalk could be uneven.

3. Eat Before You Go

Hungry kids will eat more candy than they should. That is the fast track for a belly ache. Eating a healthy dinner before the munchkins head out for Trick or Treating helps to ensure that they have the energy to walk from house to house and keep them from filling up on candy.

4. Choose the Route

It is important to know the route the kids will be walking for Halloween, even if you will be with them. Make sure the area is well lit. Remind kids to not take shortcuts down dark alleys and to stay on the streets you have agreed upon. It is also important to think about how far the walk will be. Remember however far the walk is, there is walking back as well. Make sure kids know how long it takes to walk so that they can be back on the agreed upon time.

5. Stay in a Group

If kids are walking around without an adult, make sure kids know to stay in a group. Remind kids to not wander off from their friends and that they need to stay together.

6. Walking Safely

Kids need to know where to walk, and should stay on the sidewalks or on the paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic and as far left as possible. When crossing the street it is best to cross at the corners. Remind kids to look left, right and then left again and to keep watching for cars even as they cross the street. Look for crosswalks when possible.

7. Choose the Right Houses

It important to go to the right houses. Only visit houses that have porch lights one. Kids should never go into someone’s house or car in order to get the treats. Tell children to wait on the porch or step while the homeowner gets the treats.

After the kids have come home with their loot, it is important to check the candy before the kids have a chance to eat it. Throw away anything that is not in its original packaging, has tears or holes in it or looks like it has been tampered with. It is better safe than sorry.
