This last year has been tough for a lot of reasons. Many children have been struggling with school. In my own household, we’ve had our ups and downs with e-learning and now homeschooling. My middle schooler has been passionate about space for a few years now and dreams of becoming a space scientist one day.
I’ve been doing what I can to support her dreams of exploring space and hope that will encourage her to work hard on her studies.
MOSI in Tampa hosts regular SkyWatch stargazing events. It is a fun opportunity for my daughter to pull out her telescope.
Saunders Planetarium at Museum of Science and Industry is such a neat way for kids to learn about what’s out in space. If you can’t make it to the museum in person, Virtual MOSI offers FREE Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) activities and lessons!
Right now, I’m on the hunt for summer camps with a focus on STEAM activities.
If you really want to get your tween or teen excited about college, I encourage you to do a local college campus tour.
We recently visited the USF campus, and my 12-year-old has already chosen her dormitory and where she’s going to get her morning coffee. She isn’t allowed to drink coffee yet, but I think it’s cute that she’s looking forward to those little things that are part of college life.
As parents, we all want nothing more than to help our children achieve their dreams. Saving for future college is one of the best ways to do that and Florida Prepaid makes it easy and affordable for Florida families to save for college.
Florida Prepaid College Program 101
If you’re not familiar with Florida Prepaid College Plans think of it like the 401K of college savings. It’s a smart, tax-advantaged way to save for your child’s future tuition costs. Families prepay on a monthly or lump sum basis, the future cost of college tuition, dormitory housing and specified fees. Florida Prepaid manages the fund for you, and when your child is ready for college, the plan pays the agreed-upon costs and fees that are included in your plan.
Fun Fact: Florida Prepaid is longest running and most successful prepaid program in the nation!
There are a variety of plans available to choose from to meet every family’s needs, and cost is based on the plan you choose and age of your child when you enroll. Learn more.
Every Florida Prepaid College Plan is guaranteed by the state of Florida. Even during challenging economic years, the prepaid fund has never operated on a deficit, so you can rest easy knowing that your hard-earned college savings will be safe and ready for your child to use in future years.
Using Your Florida Prepaid Plan
While Florida Prepaid Plans were designed to be used at in-state public institutions, you can use your plan at private and public schools inside or outside of Florida. If you move outside of Florida, your Florida Prepaid Plan can be used nationwide. That’s right! If you purchase a plan and then move out of Florida, your plan and its value goes with you!
Your Prepaid Plan can also be used at Technical (Vocational) schools in Florida.
What if you already have a 529 plan? It’s a great strategy to have both a 529 Savings Plan and Prepaid Plan to cover the many costs your child will encounter while in college.
I adore this photo of my family with the University of Tampa minarets looming in the background.
What if your child wants to backpack around Europe for a year after high school graduation or just isn’t quite ready for college? You’re in luck, because a Prepaid Plan locks in coverage for a full 10 years AFTER your child’s projected high school graduation.
A lot can change between kindergarten and high school graduation. Right now, my 12-year-old dreams about planets and stars. But who knows what future career she will choose? I have faith that she’ll figure it out and we’ll have a lot of fun along the way.
In times of uncertainty, Florida Prepaid is something you can count on. Learn more about Florida Prepaid College Plans HERE and be sure to use Promo Code MOM2021 to save 50% off the Application Fee through April 2021.
