Cherry Crumble Italian Tortoni Recipe

When I first got married, my culinary repertoire was small. I basically could make tuna noodle casserole, spaghetti from a jar and could make pork chops, but back then I made it using Shake and Bake. Then I discovered Bisquick. Over the years, I have collected all of the recipe booklets that they sell at the checkout lines. These little books helped me start to cook more and take it to a new level. One of the best recipes that I ever learned was about this Italian dessert, Cherry Crumble Tortoni. If you’re looking for a show-stopping cool summer dessert that is easy to prepare, this frozen dessert is for you!

What is Tortoni?

Tortoni is an Italian frozen dessert made with typically topped with whipped cream. There are several ways to make the crust but for my recipe I am making Bisquick so that it resembles a cherry crumble. The tortoni part of the recipe comes from the traditional Italian word “torta” meaning cake or pie. With only a few ingredients, it’s quick and easy to make this dessert when you have unexpected guests over or if you want something sweet but not too heavy.

What is Bisquick?

Bisquick is a baked mix used to make quick breads, biscuits, pancakes and other desserts. This popular baking mix was first introduced in 1930 by General Mills. It is used in a lot of recipes. It is actually incredibly easy to make a homemade version. The Bisquick topping on this Italian Tortoni recipe is what takes it over the top.

Do I have to use Bisquick?

Absolutely not! Though, I do love this shortcut. You can replace 1 cup of Bisquick with 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1 tablespoon butter. Combine the dry ingredients, then use a pastry cutter or fork to cut the butter into the flour mixture.

Do I Have to Use Muffin Papers

You definitely want to use the muffin papers in the muffin pan. There is a chemical reaction that takes place and it can cause the tortoni to stick to the pan. This is why so many people love this recipe because once you put everything together, they freeze very easy and are easy to remove from the pan, thanks to the papers.

How to Serve this Tortoni Recipe

This Italian tortoni recipe is best served with a dollop of whipped cream. You can add some fresh cherries or jarred maraschino cherries. Since I make this in individual servings, it is extremely easy to serve without much fuss.

Can I Make it in Other Flavors?

The best part of this recipe is how easy it is to change. This is the perfect summer dessert, so you can use whatever fruit flavor you like. if you can find the flavor in gelatin, you can make it in that style. Choose whether the cherries pair with the flavor of fruit you choose to decide. This is the only change you need to really worry about if you choose a different flavor.

Can I Cherry Crumble Tortoni in a Pan Instead

You can choose to serve this frozen dessert in a pan instead of muffin cups. I would recommend using a 9*9 pan in order to get the right depth to the dessert. Make sure you are using a freezer safe pan. I often use disposable pans for any dessert that goes in the freezer. It keeps my pans from being out of circulation but I don’t have to worry about the freezer messing up the pan or making sure it is freezer safe. not to mention, clean up is a breeze.

How to Store

You will need to keep this stored in the freezer. Think of it like ice cream. When you bring it out, it will melt and have the consistency of a very thick yogurt. Be sure to keep the muffin cups covered so that it does not get freezer burned.

  • OMG. I am going marketing tomorrow and getting all the ingredients for this. It seems the colder the weather (it’s snowing here today), the more I want summery-type foods. And Bisquick? I’m convinced it has saved many a new marriage! It’s the young bride’s best friend in the kitchen!
