Teacher Gift Idea: Pencil Flowers Craft

Back to School Teacher Gift - Pencil Flowers

Our kids go back to school in just 2 weeks. Is it me or does it seem like summer breaks get shorter and shorter every year? My children and grandchildren have always been blessed by having the best teachers. It takes a very special person to be an educator, and we want to help our teachers start the school year with a little extra joy by giving them each a bouquet of pencil flowers. I got the inspiration for this project over at the blog Happy Clippings. She had done this as an end of the school year gift for teachers, but I think this pencil flower craft is also great for back to school teacher gifts. Isn’t it just adorable? And it’s super simple to make.

I love that this is a functional gift. The flowers can easily be removed and the pencils used for fun things like grading papers. I personally think the bouquet is too sweet to take apart, but the pencils will come in handy in an emergency.

Here’s the Tutorial:

To make pencil flowers you will need the following supplies: pencils, patterned scrapbook or card stock paper, large flower punch, craft glue, green ribbon, scissors and a hole punch.

First cut the flowers using the flower punch. You will need two flowers punches per pencil. a patterned print and a solid or contrasting print. For my bouquet I punched 6 flowers from 4 different papers, a total of 24 flowers, enough for 12 flower pencils.

Once you’ve cut out all your flowers, glue a patterned flower on top of the solid or contrasting print flower. The petals should be overlapping so that both patterns are visible.

After the glue has dried, make a hole in the center of each flower using a hole punch. The hole from the hole punch won’t be large enough to fit over the pencil eraser, so you will need to do two holes close to each other (overlapping), making a slightly bigger hole than a single hole punch.

Next, carefully insert the pencil eraser through the flower. Tie a small piece of green ribbon around the pencil for the leaves and stem.ย For a vase I glued some scrapbook paper over an empty soup can, but a canning jar would also be a good option.
