Any parent will agree that what we want most for our kids is that they be happy and healthy. Self confidence is a big part of both health and happiness. Building a child’s confidence is a collective effort – parents, teachers, and other adult role models all play a role in building self confidence in kids. Whether you are a parent or not, chances are you have had an impact on how a child feels about himself or herself.
Lack of good self image often leads to behavior problems. Do you know a child who acts in a destructive way? How a child acts is usually a reflection on how they feel about themselves. It’s important to be sensitive to this and form a plan of action to help build self confidence.
Pay attention to your child. Taking time out each day to spend quality time with your child will show your child that they are important. Give your undivided attention and really listen to what your child has to say. It can be as simple as sitting down to dinner as a family, turning off the electronics, and having a discussion about the days events.
Allow your child to suffer losses. It’s important to teach kids that they can’t always be the winner, and allow them to make mistakes. Letting them learn how to recover or come back from a loss or mistake, not only builds character but also gives them confidence in knowing they can overcome obstacles.
Praise your child for accomplishments, whether big or small. Make sure that the praise is genuine and warranted. If you praise your child for everything, they might become suspicious and think you are overcompensating for something they are doing wrong. With younger children it can be as simple as giving praise for brushing and flossing their teeth. If your child has a healthy smile, he/she will be more confident.

These are such great tips! I need to try ACT with my son too, I think he’d love the flavor.
I think allowing children to suffer losses and feel the emotions around that is the hardest part to do as a parent. We always want to fix things, until we can’t. But it is all part of the growing and learning process.
