Can Loud Music Damage Your Hearing?

Can loud music damage your hearing?

A few nights ago we were sitting in our living room having some family time in front of the television. Yes, I used ‘family time’ and television in the same sentence. Anyway, we were caught off guard when our house began to shake down to its very foundation. Then the noise came, boom boom boom from a car driving past our house. I remember wondering how anyone could actually sit in a car with the music so loud.

This event got me thinking more about the damage that loud music can do to someone’s hearing, especially a child or teenager. I recall many times that I could not get the attention of one of the boys, because the music blaring out of their ear buds was so loud. I have often said, “turn that down before you go deaf!” But could this really happen?

It turns out that loud noise, including music, can cause both temporary and permanent hearing loss. If the noise around you is so loud that you have to shout to be heard, there is a chance that the mechanism inside your ear can be injured. Temporary hearing loss really can happen after you’ve been exposed to loud noise for any duration.

Another side effect is tinnitus, which is a medical term for ringing in the ears. Although your hearing frequently returns to normal, the dangerous part is that you can lose it permanently if you listen to loud noise or music over and over again. Once you have exposed your self to loud noise over a long period of time, permanent hearing loss can occur. This means that you won’t be able to hear as well as you once did.

So the next time your kids have the music blaring, you may want to encourage them to turn it down a notch, before they suffer permanent hearing loss.
