Cirque Du Soleil : La Nouba at Downtown Disney

If ever you’re in central Florida, Cirque Du Soleil’s La Nouba is a show you don’t want to miss. Located in Downtown Disney, La Nouba written and directed by Franco Dragone,  has been selling out shows and dazzling spectators since 1984. After hearing about how wonderful the show is for years, Laura and I finally caught this show for the first time last month. We can’t wait to go back and see it again!

Cirque Du Soleil La Nouba at Downtown DisneyThe show begins with a parade featuring many of the shows interesting characters. Then the opening act begins with a dynamic jump roping duo. If you haven’t seen the show you’re probably wondering what could be so special about jumping rope, after all it’s a rather pedestrian activity. This jump roping act included so many ropes, stunts and speed, that I found my jaw gaping open. It was pretty amazing and one of the things that makes La Nouba so incredible. They have a magical way of taking the ordinary and transforming it into the extraordinary.

Throughout the show we were on the edge of our seats as trapeze artists, tight rope walkers, dancers, stunt cyclists, amazing jugglers, and acrobats performed spectacular feats that required incredible balance, strength, and skill. One of our favorite performances was by the aerial acrobats, who gracefully flew through the air on silken red sheets. It was both beautiful and exhilarating to watch.

A crowd favorite was the diabolo girls, a performance by four young girls with ropes and large wooden spools that were tossed high into the air, and caught with amazing precision.

Part of the excitement of the show was that there was so much going on at once. I found my eyes quickly darting all over the theater, trying not to miss a thing. There was one character in particular that seemed to pop up all over the place – an odd, muscular man with the @ symbol on the front of his leotard. He was creeping about all through the show and then for the finale, he was part of an incredible spectacle of acrobats leaping up to the roof of a multi-story building. It was an epic battle of acrobats tumbling in and out of windows.

The live music was incredible, and the show’s two singers perfectly complimented each other – one with a powerful belting voice, and the other an almost haunting falsetto. I can’t finish writing this without mentioning the clowns. As someone not particularly fond of clowns, I really enjoyed the clowns of La Nouba who were a very integral part of the show. They were so whimsical with beautiful costumes. It was impossible not to love them.

Disclosure: I received complimentary tickets to the show. However, all thoughts are my own.
