Dining with the Dinos at T-Rex Cafe in Downtown Disney was such a fun experience. T-Rex Cafe is so much more than a restaurant. If you’re looking for a full sensory dining experience, the T-Rex Cafe is sure to please. Before entering the restaurant, we walked under a life size T-Rex skeleton, and knew we were about to experience something very special.
The restaurant is full of sights and sounds that take you back to the Prehistoric Age. Laura (Mom) and I were completely caught off guard by how realistic the life size dinosaurs all looked. They moved and roared much like we imagine they did over 65 million years ago.
Our table was located in a very special room that got dark and experienced a meteor shower every 20 minutes. It was very cool and if you ever visit T-Rex Cafe, be sure to ask if there is a table available under the meteor showers. We were seated right next to a giant Woolly Mammoth that came to life when we least expected it. It was a bit startling the first time, but after that we were looking forward to it.
The dining room next to us was engulfed in prehistoric ice, complete with frozen dinosaur skeletons. Laura and I were amazed by how realistic it looked, and will definitely ask to be seated in the ice room on our next visit.
While the dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures are all pretty amazing, we did after all go to T-Rex for the food. The dino themed menu was a lot of fun to read, with dishes like Mega Mess-O-Bones, Woolly Mammoth Chicken, and Jurassic Shrimp Skewers to choose from. We started off our meal with a an appetizer called Supersaurus Sampler. I think the “super” in Supersaurus stands for the super large quantity of food that you get.
The Sampler included some of T-Rex favorites like Pepper Jack Quesa with tortilla chips, Brachiosaurus Bruschetta, T-Rexadillas, and Onion Rings. For an additional cost we could have added Ribs to the Sampler. Everything was delicious, with the Brachiosaurus Bruschetta being a favorite for both of us, although the T-Rexadillas are a close second. This appetizer had generous portions and would be plenty of food for four people.
Mom really enjoyed her Paleo Shrimp which was linguini tossed in a pomodoro cream sauce and topped with Parmesan crusted shrimp. It was a very generous portion that could satisfy the heartiest of appetites. My Woolly Mammoth Chicken was absolutely wonderful. It was both colorful and delicious, loaded up with 2 large chicken breasts, lots of fresh veggies and garlic mashed potatoes, all cooked to perfection.
I have to admit that I was a bit surprised by just how good the food was. I went in expecting that the experience itself would outshine the food, but that wasn’t the case. The menu had a wonderful variety and included options to please even the pickiest of kids.
If you’re visiting Downtown Disney without the kids, you might want to stop in and enjoy the bar. It’s a pretty neat place to have a drink, with a giant sized octopus looming overhead. Before our meal, I enjoyed one of their signature drinks called the Lava Flow. It was a delicious blend of Malibu Coconut Rum, and pina colada mix topped with strawberry puree.
As mom and I enjoyed our meals, taking in all the amazing sights and sounds of the restaurant, I began to feel a little guilty for not having my nieces and nephew with me. They would have flipped over this restaurant, so I can’t wait to make another trip to Kissimmee and take them with us. One thing I would like to note is that the dining experience at T-Rex Cafe could be a bit overwhelming for young children or those who have sensory sensitivity. There was a young boy seated next to us who was having a bit of a melt down.
Disclosure: We dined as guests of T-Rex Cafe. However, all thoughts are completely my own.
It sounds like an awesome time, as my youngest nephew would say. And the food looks great, too.
