Disney Pixar’s ‘Brave’ Movie Review – Brave is out June 22nd Everywhere!

Disney Pixar's Brave Movie Review

Our fate lives within us. You only have to be BRAVE enough to see it.

My first thoughts are to say how Awesome, Fantastic, and Wonderful the movie BRAVE is, but truly that just isn’t enough to do this film justice. Earlier this week I had the pleasure of seeing a screening of BRAVE and attending the “green” carpet premiere in Hollywood. Seeing the movie twice gave me the opportunity to realize and appreciate some things that I missed the first time when I was so mesmerized. So if you can see it more than once, I definitely recommend it. Also, see BRAVE in 3D if you have the chance. Typically I am not a huge fan of 3D, but BRAVE in 3D is quite extraordinary and worth paying an extra few bucks.

Pixar’s first female heroine!

Disney Pixar's Brave Movie Review

All the buzz about BRAVE featuring Pixar’s first female heroine had me going to this movie with some great expectations. We’ve seen the Princess stories time and time again where the beautiful Princess gets into trouble and the brave Prince comes to her rescue. BRAVE is not your typical Disney Princess story and Merida is not your typical Princess. There is no Prince to her rescue in this movie. Merida is a real girl with faults. Like all teenagers she often doesn’t see eye to eye with her parents. In the film, Merida’s mother is attempting to groom her to be a proper Princess in preparation for a suitor. Merida who is headstrong and a skilled archer is a bit of a tomboy, so she has very different plans for herself. This struggle with her parents ultimately results in some serious consequence.

Many powerful messages!

In an attempt to escape her parents plans to marry her off, Merida seeks the help of a witch to change her own fate. Merida gets a spell that will change her mother, but it doesn’t yield the results she was hoping for and changes her mother in a way that she had never wanted or dreamed of. Like most teenagers, Merida has trouble admitting when she is wrong. The terrible spell is not broken until Merida admits her mistake and attempts to right her wrong. Only then is the bond with her mother mended.

Brave is about a teenager’s struggle with finding herself, with creating her own destiny'” says director Mark Andrews of Disney Pixar’s 13th full-length feature. “More specifically, it’s about Merida’s struggle in reconciling how the world sees her versus how she sees herself. True courage must be found on the inside.”

Meet the characters of BRAVE. The BRAVE characters include Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) who is the headstrong daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). The lords of the land include the massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Also in the movie is an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters) and Merida’s 3 triplet brothers Hamish, Harris and Hubert who don’t say anything in the film but steal the show as Merida’s clever, mischievous little brothers.

BRAVE will take you through a lot of different emotions. I found myself laughing a lot and at times tearing up. There are so many parts of this movie that people can relate to, in particular the loving bond and struggles between Merida and her parents. The musical score is phenomenal and one your entire family will enjoy dancing and listening to long after the movie has come out. Set in the land of Scotland and Scottish traditions, BRAVE takes us to a magical place most of us are not familiar with. There are a couple of bear fight scenes that might be a bit startling to younger children who are easily frightened, but there is nothing that would be inappropriate for the entire family. I love a movie like BRAVE that the moms and dads enjoy as much as the kids.

I’ve tried not to give too much of the movie away. Disney Pixar’s BRAVE comes out this Friday, June 22nd to theaters everywhere. Please take your family to see it and come back to give me your review of the film.
