As kids start to get their own electronic devices, like smart phones and tablets, as parents, we want to make sure that kids are using the devices responsibly. We want to monitor what they are playing, or watching and what websites they are visiting and it isn’t practical to look over their shoulder every minute while they are playing. I know I sure as heck can’t. How do you adequately monitor your child’s phone usage without being their constant shadow? I’ve partnered with Verizon to tell you about Verizon Family Base which a new parental control add-on service that’s available to Verizon customers. FamilyBase by Verizon helps parents keep kids safe while using their mobile devices, and that’s something this protective mom truly appreciates.

In order to see all that FamilyBase has to offer, I added it to my personal Verizon Wireless account and set it up to monitor my son’s mobile usage. I am so impressed by how comprehensive the service is, and its ease of use. I haven’t given in to my little girl’s persistent begging for a smartphone yet, but that time is coming very soon. I’ll need FamilyBase more than ever when that time comes! As a Verizon customer and protective parent, I am thrilled to learn about this new add-on service because let’s face it – giving your child their first cell phone is kinda scary. FamilyBase is a comprehensive and easy-to-use parental control for your mobile phone, and it is sure to provide peace of mind for a lot of parents. Here’s what I like about it:
Monitor apps and websites. It is a must-have feature to any parent, no matter how old the children are. FamilyBase lets parents know what apps the kids are playing. Some apps are OK for older kids, but not for younger kids. Parents can monitor who is using what apps and if it is appropriate or not. Easily block access to inappropriate apps and websites.

Screen calls, texts and contacts. Not only does FamilyBase let parents monitor the apps that kids are using, parents can also see all of the phone calls and text that a phone is receiving and when a new contact is added. Simply log into the FamilyBase dashboard and pull up the name of the device that you want to check. The dashboard shows all of the call and text activity. This lets you see how many texts the child is using, how much time they are spending on a phone call and even how many texts and calls the child is having with a specific person and how long they are talking. The dashboard even shows when your child is texting, so you can see if your child is using their phone after bedtime or during school hours. You can set up limits for school time, bedtime or just late hours in general. You are even able to set up a contact watch list.
Monitor usage. Parents can also monitor usage. Parents can decide when kids can and cannot be using their devices. Maybe bedtime is the hard time in the house. Maybe the teen keeps using their phone after bedtime, but using FamilyBase parents can set timers on when it can be used.
Control when the phone can be used. Some parents worry about having their child’s phone in a lock mode because of emergencies. Parents can set the phone on-demand lock so the phone cannot be used during family time, but the phone is always able to still call 911 for emergencies. Unlike the bedtime or other lock times, this FamilyBase feature lets you lock the phone for a certain amount of time, like 30 minutes. I love the idea of using lock mode for homework and mealtime.

Block numbers, calls and texts. Parents can also block certain numbers from calls or texts, and also certain types of numbers. Using the blocked numbers feature parents can block numbers and contacts or from restricted or private numbers. Parents can also restrict certain emails and screen names as well.
Why choose FamilyBase by Verizon? It is a great way to stay on top of who your kids are talking to and what they are doing online. It is also a way for Verizon customers to stay on top of usage overages. The same idea of watching your child can be used to monitor what is going on with the family’s plan. All of this is available for only $4.99 a month per line (the first month is free!).
