Recently the kids and I were talking about those in our community who deserve our appreciation and in what ways can we celebrate them? We came up with a list and of course at the top of the list were our firefighters and first responders. We have a fire station right in our neighborhood and so we daily hear their sirens as they are headed out to the next emergency. We stop and say a prayer and send them good thoughts as they are on their way! The inspiration for our firetruck food craft.
My youngest boy asked if perhaps we could go to our local library and find books to read about firetrucks and firefighters. So…what’s a mom to do when one of her children asks to go to the library to find books? We went! We brought home a stack of books and enjoyed hours of reading and conversation regarding how important our hometown heroes are.
My oldest boy then decided to write letters and draw pictures to deliver to our local fire station. He was so happy and anxious to tell them how much we appreciate them. He wrote the most beautiful, thoughtful words and his pictures were amazing!
My daughter remembered doing a delicious firetruck food craft in kindergarten and asked if we could recreate it! I thought this was a perfect way to complete our hometown heroes project. She was quick to remember that we have to make sure our firetruck food craft was safe for her little brother. You see…my youngest boy has severe food allergies and so we work hard each day to include him and keep him safe. We brainstormed ways to substitute graham crackers and candies that were safe foods for little brother.
Supplies:
- Red Fruit Roll-Ups (Gluten-Free) for the body of the firetruck
- Veggie Chips for the wheels and window
- Glutino Pretzel Sticks for the ladder
- Gluten-Free cereal or candies for other small details
I left it up to my son’s imagination and here are his creations…
I hope that you’ve found some inspiration and you too can celebrate your hometown heroes with the kiddos in your life!

It’s great for our children to appreciate their hometown heroes such as firemen. They deserve our respect and admiration.
I couldn’t agree more, Sheila! Thanks for reading! 😉
I have a box of fruit roll ups and this is such a fun snack idea to do with my son and daughter. Thanks for the idea!
You’re welcome! Isn’t it wonderful when you already have supplies on hand? That’s the best! 😉
These are really cute. They would be fun to make a school during fire prevention week.
What a great idea, Rachel! 🙂
