Last month, while in Los Angeles for the Brave/Cars Land Event, I got to attend a sneak peek of Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie. While watching the 20 minutes of film, I quickly fell in love with the heartwarming story about a boy named Victor and his dog Sparky. With quite a few teenagers and young adults in the house, I am pretty familiar with some of Tim Burton’s other films such as Alice in Wonderland and The Nightmare Before Christmas. I attended the screening with high expectations and was not at all disappointed.
Although Frankenweenie was filmed using stop-motion animation and is in black and white, it still holds a very wide appeal. The kids and teens will of course love it, but even a forty-something mom like me was captivated by this film. Like you would expect from a Tim Burton movie, Frankenweenie is dark and definitely has that weird factor, but it is also very heartwarming and endearing. I found myself giggling one minute and mouth gaping open the next, throughout the 20 minutes film. I eagerly anticipate the film’s release on October 5th!
After the screening, we had the chance to chat with Frankenweenie co-producer Allison Abbate. She explained how Tim Burton drew on a lot of his own personal experiences for Frankenweenie. For example, the film takes place in a place called New Holland, which is sort of like Burbank and that’s where Tim grew up. It just felt like Tim was getting back to his roots in a lot of ways with this movie. In sort of the iconic old school way, Tim Burton is back.
About Frankenweenie
After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.
I am over-the-top excited about the release of Frankenweenie on October 5th!
