Get Away to St. Augustine, Florida

I have so many great things to say about St. Augustine. It’s a great place my Husband and I use as a “get away”. There’s much to explore, places to eat, some adorable shops, and best of all, in my opinion, Penny Farthing Inn.

Did you know that St. Augustine is the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement in the United States? There’s a whole lot of history to explore.

The Food

This latest trip, the best place we found for an afternoon lunch was the Bull and Crown Publick House. After spending some time exploring the fort in the sunshine, we worked up quite the appetite for a cold beverage and full bellies. I had the Colonial Club and it was perfect.

For dinner, our favorite experience was Meehan’s Irish Pub. My Reuben was exactly as expected but the star of the show was the Bangers and Mash.

Both restaurants were such a pleasure to visit. The staff was kind, and patient, and on point. We were a party of nine with five of us primarily German speaking. Imagine just a tiny bit of chaos for one waiter! They were professional and excellent. Food, atmosphere, drinks, and service would all get the highest ratings from me. I believe my friends and family would agree.

Exploration

For exploration, St. Augustine has many things to offer. Of course one should always visit the Castillo De San Marcos aka “The Fort”. The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States.

The fortress was originally constructed to defend Florida against pirates hunting the Spanish treasure fleets traveling along the Gulf Stream. It is very unique in that it’s one of only two fortifications in the world built out of a semi-rare form of limestone called coquina.

This was my second visit here and it was just as good as the first. Grab your information packet for a self guided tour and if you can, join up for a free tour offered by the park rangers.

St. Augustine offers some beautiful walks through the old town, around the beautiful campus of Flagler College, and down Matanza’s Bay. The blue water and draw bridge are serene.

My next visit will include a walk to the famous Lighthouse. Whether you are looking for adventure or relaxation, St. Augustine is a wonderful choice. Happy travels to you!
