We are celebrating girl power today with our sponsor Simon & Schuster!

There are many social and emotional issues that girls are faced with, especially during the middle grade years. Their bodies are changing. Boys are taking notice. Navigating friendships seem impossible during these years. Talking with some of my mom friends, I’ve heard stories of daughters who have experienced “mean girls” as early as kindergarten. There are so many things that can hurt a girl’s self esteem and confidence. Not to mention that girls aren’t always given the same chances as boys.

Being a girl is cool, but it isn’t always easy.

Raising happy, independent, confident daughters definitely comes with its challenges. T is in fourth grade this year, and there have been days when she’s come home from school devastated because so-and-so said she isn’t her friend anymore. She’s had to work really hard to keep up her grades and sometimes doubts her abilities to do well in school. It kills me. I wish she knew how truly AWESOME, capable and beautiful she is on the inside and out.

I encourage her, foster her interests, and make sure to let her know often how great she is. I tell her that she can do anything. After a visit to the planetarium last year she became very interested in space, so U got her a telescope and some educational books about outer space. We’ve been stargazing ever since, and now she wants to be a space scientist when she grows up.

With the holiday season coming up, I thought it would be great to share some ideas for the best “girl power” gifts for middle graders. Gifts that will boost confidence, build character and encourage her to reach for the stars.

First on our list is The Littlest Bigfoot series for middle-graders by #1 New York Times bestseller Jennifer Weiner. Books can be a powerful tool in helping to build self-esteem in girls. There are currently two books in this series: The Littlest Bigfoot and Little Bigfoot, Big City from publisher by Simon & Schuster. Both books one and two are available now, and the final book will be released in 2018.

You may know author Jennifer Weiner from her long-list of bestselling adult books, but her new series, The Littlest Bigfoot, is perfect for middle-grade readers aged 8 -12! As a mom, I really like that this sweet trilogy explores themes of self-love, positive body image, and friendship between girls. The series is about two girls who have always felt like outsiders – Alice, a young girl in-and-out of boarding schools, and Millie, a Bigfoot who lives hidden away from the human world – who find kindred spirits in each other and form a special friendship. In the newly released second book, the two friends journey to New York City to chase Millie’s dreams, uncover a secret about Alice, and all the while evade Bigfoot hunters!

The Littlest Bigfoot series is a perfect holiday gift for your middle-grade girl. The characters own their uniqueness, chase their dreams, and have a real and true friendship worth celebrating! Read on for some of our other gift ideas for your girl-power girl this year.
