The fact that 1 in 5 children in America go to bed hungry is unimaginable, but it’s a reality. That’s 16 million children – equate that to the populations of Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago and Philadelphia combined. I know. It’s mind blowing.
I am so proud to partner with Unilever Project Sunlight to encourage people to get involved and help put an end to child hunger in America. Unilever has agreed to make contribution in my name to Feeding America, in exchange for helping spread the word about the #ShareAMeal initiative. Unilever Project Sunlight is an initiative focused on encouraging people to create a brighter future for children – by taking small steps to live sustainably, use less and share even more.
Unilever is in partnership with Feeding America, an amazing organization which serves approximately 12 million children each year.
Share A Meal to Help Turn the Tables on Child Hunger in America.
These hungry children are our neighbors and friends. Maybe even family. Most suffer silently, wondering where their next meal will come from if at all. It’s so easy for you and me to help children and families in need.
Unilever wanted to share stories about Americans who are struggling with hunger. With the help of Unilever Bright Future Award recipient, Patrick Creadon, Unilever has created a heart-wrenching and inspiring look at how Americans are grappling with child hunger in a four-minute documentary called “Going to Bed Hungry: The Changing Face of Child Hunger.”
This touching documentary reveals the power and promise of a shared meal for families across America. I hope this documentary has inspired you to help. One way you can help is by sharing a meal this holiday season. Visit ProjectSunlight.us. There you can download the informative Unilever Share A Meal Toolkit to learn more about the power of a shared meal.
Unilever Project Sunlight wants to encourage people around the country to get involved. The small act of sharing a meal could have a big impact on a family in need. Below you will find a variety of small actionable ways to Share A Meal and help fight child hunger here in the U.S.
- Share A Meal Potluck – Host neighboring families for a dinner and invite a family in need to join.
- Get Your Community Involved – Partner with a local community organization to host community potluck in your area.
- Local Food Drives – Organize your very own food drive or utilize the Feeding America online Food Bank Locator tool to get in touch with a local food and volunteer at a food drive.
- Host a Virtual Food Drive – Plan a virtual food drive with measurable goals online using the Feeding America Personal Fundraiser tool and promote participation in your community.
- Create your OWN way to share.

Child hunger is a huge problem. Thanks for sharing this information.
Child hunger is SUCH a problem … I wish more companies would step up and help out like Unilever is!
Wow, 16 million?! I knew it was a problem but didn’t realize the reality of it. Our community has a summer food program that feeds kids that usually get a free lunch at school. I know that isn’t enough though, since they need 3 meals a day. 🙁
I’ll definitely help share the message!
This statistic just should not be! So glad there are companies out there making a difference and encouraging us to do what we can.
It just saddens me to no end that kids in our own neighborhood are hungry. Every child should have 3 meals a day. Thank you to Unilever for helping!
i can’t believe we have hunger in our United States of America. We give so much to other countries. I get upset when we don’t take care of our people first. Something is so wrong.
So sad we have so many hungry children. This is a great cause!
I absolutely hate that we have this issue in our country. I’m so glad Unilever is dedicated to the cause.
I love the idea of sharing in a potluck. We try to have people over to eat with us often because you never know what their home situation is. We just moved from a place where kids were going to bed hungry and it broke my heart.
Great campaign! No child should go hungry. 🙁
Childhood hunger is such a horrible thing. A lot of people don’t realize how common it is, even among the kids you see in class with your child.
This is a subject that is so dear to my heart. It’s so sad that there are so many hungry kids.
Child hunger is such a big issue, and it’s so overlooked. I’m glad that Unilever is doing something about it.
I work with kiddos who sometimes don’t know where their next meal is going to come from. This is such an important cause.
Child hunger is such a huge issue and it’s so important to raise this awareness. This is a really great cause! Such a dad subject!
I think it is great that Unilever is helping kids in need to eat. It would be great if more companies stepped up.
It’s shocking how many kids go hungry in our own country. This is a great campaign!
Such a wonderful campaign. It amazes me how much hunger we have in this great country. No child should have to wonder where there next meal is coming from!
What a great cause and wonderful way to bring awareness to child hunger. It makes me so sad to know and think about the children that aren’t getting the proper nutrition.
Thank you for sharing — it’s so great to see large corporation caring about the often forgotten children in our communities. What an important campaign!
I volunteer at our local church and animal shelter every year around the holidays in particular!
Wow, that is awesome that Unilever is stepping up like! Thanks for sharing this campaign.
I retweeted your tweet. Because Unilever is doing this it makes me want to in turn support them. I’ll look for Unilever products when doing my grocery and household products.
So glad that Unilever is getting involved. Fighting child hunger is really important!
Thanks for the link to the share a meal kit. I think this is great of Unilever to take on the task!
Unilver is doing a great thing with the end child hunger program. No child should have to face hunger in any part of the world.
What a great program! I love that they are trying to help end childhood hunger. It’s such an important cause.
It is really sad that in this day and age, hunger is still an issue. This is a great program that I’ve also been a part of for several years now.
This is such a great program. I love that they are bringing awareness to this issue!
A very good program – hopefully someday we will figure out how to feed everyone. So sad that people go to bed hungry
I love that Unilever, a brand I love is making a difference. No one deserves to go to bed hungry on this earth.
What an awesome program. It is one of the best out there. Thanks for sharing as we all need to be reminded what is out there to help!
Such a great program. It makes me so sad to hear how many children go hungry.
I do not know what to say, I was that child when I was younger, many nights I went to bed hungry. Now that I am a Mom, I never let my kids goto be hungry, in tough times I will eat a very small amount so I know they are full. I do not know if this is TMI, or not. It can be anyone.
You are so right, Ruth. It can be anyone. I have been in some tight spots myself as a single Mom. We do the best we can. ((hugs))
I love this campaign and what they are doing. No child should go to bed hungry – EVER!
I think this campaign is so refreshing! I love this campaign and spreading awareness to hunger in our own country. It is important to help!
