I don’t normally post this sort of thing to my blog, but something is really bothering me and I would love to get my readers input on the situation.
I live in Georgia where high school football is a really big deal. I like football, but in my opinion way too much emphasis is put on it. In my county there is no high school band, drama club, orchestra, art, track, wrestling or any other activity that might take away from the football team. It is really quite sad, in my opinion. This seems to be the trend in most small communities of Georgia.
An event took place at a football game last Friday in a nearby community that frankly leaves me shaking my head.
The Hancock County High School football team was hosting the Warren County team. Things went terribly wrong after the game ended leaving Warren County as the victors…
The Warren County football team was heading to the locker room which had been locked. While they were outside the locker room, the Hancock County football players attacked them with helmets. The Warren County coach David Daniel tried to intervene while one of his players was being hit. The attacker then turned on him, smashing a helmet into his face. The coach has had multiple surgeries and has had extensive damage done to one of his eyes.
What bothers me even more about this situation is that a week has passed and there have been no arrests made. To make a bad situation worse, this football team continues to play ball pending further investigation. They are scheduled to play in my county next weekend and I am very concerned for the safety of our children. I will be urging our county officials to cancel the game this week. I am afraid my request will only fall of deaf ears. After all the game must go on…
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into these attacks. Let us hope that their investigation moves swiftly.
What do you think about this situation? What would you do if this team was coming to your home town?
