The Global 6K for Water is coming up on May 6. Having not walked much recently due to back trouble, I’ve been doing a bit of preparation. In addition to adding another daily walk with the dog (who has also benefited from this), I have started going for an early morning walk by myself. As out of shape as I am at present, I realize it is highly unlikely that I’ll be running the race. But that’s okay. Walkers (even slow walkers) like me are encouraged to participate. One thing I’ve noticed with all this training I have been doing is just how hot it is already here in Florida. It is barely spring and we already have highs near 90 degrees. I’ve had to increase my water consumption considerably. It makes me think about all the people who don’t have easy access to clean and safe water like I do. In Ethiopia alone, about 40 million people lack a clean water source and an estimated 70 million live without adequate sanitation. Can you imagine?
Women and children are the most impacted by the water crisis, as the burden of finding and carrying water each day often falls to them. The walk for water can be long for people around the world, an average of 6 kilometers (approximately 3.7 miles) in search of water, and that water is often contaminated with life-threatening diseases. This contaminated water causes many health problems. Nearly 1,000 children under age 5 die EVERY DAY from diarrhea caused by contaminated water, poor sanitation and improper hygiene.

Just stop for a moment and let that sink in. I think I speak for most of us when I say that clean and safe water is something we take for granted here in the U.S. and other industrialized countries. The idea, no, the REALITY that there are mothers across the world mourning the loss of their children because of a lack of water is unconscionable.
Here’s what World Vision is doing about it:
World Vision believes the global water and sanitation crisis can be solved within our lifetime. World Vision provides a new person with clean water every 30 seconds as part of their full solution to end poverty. In 2015, World Vision provided access to clean water to 2.3 million people, and the organization’s goal is to provide clean water and sanitation to one new person every 10 seconds by 2020.
World Vision provides safe water, sanitation and hygiene education to decrease illnesses, improve health and lessen the burden on women and children.
Why is this so important?
Safe drinking water, improved sanitation, good hygiene and good water resource management can lead to a reduction in child mortality, cut transmission of malaria, improve public health and reduce extreme poverty.
Combining water, sanitation and hygiene solutions together can cut preventable child deaths by up to 57 percent, reduce chronic malnutrition by 40 percent, reduce school absenteeism among girls by 50 percent, and obtain an 8:1 economic return in target communities.

On Saturday, May 6, 2017 people from around the globe will be walking or running a 6K to support World Vision’s water initiatives through the World Vision Global 6K for Water. It is always hard to imagine the sufferings of people in other countries who are not as progressed as we are here in the U.S. This is why we donate and support our missionaries and organizations like World Vision to help others. It’s so important that we do what we can.
Oh my. So sad to know the statistic of those who die from dirty drinking water. Such a sad thing to know. Great that you can run and train for such a great cause.

It breaks my heart to know there are people who do not have access to clean water. I did not know about the Global 6K but I am going to look into what we can do around here.
I am all for this!! We do take water for granted here. I have seen first hand the effects of limited to no water and it’s a tragedy. I love the vision that World Vision has. Helping ppl with the basics is much neeed
This is such an important cause. It’s inexcusable that in the 21st century, there are so many people who still don’t have access to clean water.
This is a great way to get active, work on yourself and help people in need. Safe drinking water is a necessity.
