Pirate Costumes

Treasure hunt costumes are totally optional. I found some fun pirate accessories at my local dollar store that I couldn’t resist. I only spent 3 dollars. Homemade costumes are great too!

Craft Your Clues

Write out some clues for your treasure hunt that will guide your players from one spot to the next. It might be helpful to first figure out where you want to put your clues, and where the hidden treasure will be placed. Each clue will build anticipation for the treasure. Write your clues based on the age of your child. You don’t want this treasure hunt to be too hard.

Some examples:

Q: What likes to hang out in pairs and goes on before your shoes?
A: Socks

Q: Look for a rainbow in a box?
A: Box of Crayons

Q: Where do you go for a cool, cool drink?
A: Refrigerator

Q: What has a ring, but no finger?
A: Telephone

Choose Your Booty aka Treasure

The size and composition of your loot will determine where you can hide it. You really don’t have to buy anything at all to have a treasure hunt, but some simple dollar store booty is sure to delight little pirates.

For our recent treasure hunt, I chose Pirate’s Booty as the treasure. It seemed the perfect fit, and Tati was thrilled to find it! Pirate’s Booty is a perfect snack for fueling treasure hunt adventures and other creative play.

  • My kids absolutely love treasure hunts AND pirate booty. We did a treasure hunt recently and I drew a map on a paper bag and it led to a new adventure book we’re reading together.
