Ahoy, me Hearties! I have a fun activity to share with you today—how to create a treasure hunt for your kids! With a little creativity, a treasure hunt for your kids can be the ultimate boredom buster. Treasure hunts are a fun and interactive activity for children of all ages. It takes little to no money to create a fun indoor or backyard adventure. Do you know that Talk Like a Pirate Day is coming up on September 19? I think a treasure hunt is the perfect activity for that day.
There are essentially two things that you need to create a treasure hunt – loot and clues. I’ve partnered with Pirate’s Booty to share some tips for creating a personalized treasure hunt for your wee Buccaneer.
How to Create a Treasure Hunt for Your Kids
Pirate Costumes
Treasure hunt costumes are totally optional. I found some fun pirate accessories at my local dollar store that I couldn’t resist. I only spent 3 dollars. Homemade costumes are great too!
Craft Your Clues
Write out some clues for your treasure hunt that will guide your players from one spot to the next. It might be helpful to first figure out where you want to put your clues, and where the hidden treasure will be placed. Each clue will build anticipation for the treasure. Write your clues based on the age of your child. You don’t want this treasure hunt to be too hard.
Some examples:
Q: What likes to hang out in pairs and goes on before your shoes?
A: Socks
Q: Look for a rainbow in a box?
A: Box of Crayons
Q: Where do you go for a cool, cool drink?
A: Refrigerator
Q: What has a ring, but no finger?
A: Telephone
Choose Your Booty aka Treasure
The size and composition of your loot will determine where you can hide it. You really don’t have to buy anything at all to have a treasure hunt, but some simple dollar store booty is sure to delight little pirates.
For our recent treasure hunt, I chose Pirate’s Booty as the treasure. It seemed the perfect fit, and Tati was thrilled to find it! Pirate’s Booty is a perfect snack for fueling treasure hunt adventures and other creative play.
Kids like that it’s delicious, and you’ll like that Pirate’s Booty is baked, not fried. It contains no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. If your treasure hunter has gluten allergies, you’ll be glad to know that it’s also gluten-free.
Pirate’s Booty doesn’t sacrifice taste for goodness. As a mom, I really appreciate that. It’s a snack I feel good about giving to my family.

So much fun. i would love to do this for all my kiddos. I’ve never thought to do a treasure hunt and I know they’ll love it!
My youngest is obsessed with pirates, so this is right up our alley. Got to pick up some Pirate Booty for Monday’s festivities.
Wow, this sounds like a wonderful activity. I haven’t tried making a treasure hunt for my son, maybe when he is 5 years old.
So much fun! Pirates Booty is a healthy alternative for chips and surprisingly fills!
So much fun! We like to wait for the cousins to show up and then we create a big one to get all the kids moving. We normally do a big one on Easter and have the clues hidden both inside and outside (weather permitting as we have snow!)
I love this idea. Of course, I would love to find the Pirates Booty too! I bet kids really enjoy the treasure hunt – I think it could be tailored to adults too.
How fun and creative! My kids would have loved this when they were little. Honestly, they would probably still love it!
Wow, this is a lovey activity, My son will surely love to go on a treasure hunt adventure!
My boys have always been big fans of Pirate Booty! I always felt good about giving it to them instead of other snacks!
What a fun idea! My kids would love this! Especially the Pirate’s Booty. They LOVE that stuff!
