Inspire Your Daughter to Love Her Hair

The pressure to look a certain way comes at an early age. Join the Dove Love Your Hair campaign and inspire your daughter to love her hair.

I am thrilled to partner with Dove to share LoveYourHair.com with you, and to encourage women everywhere to inspire their daughters to love their hair. Confidence, self acceptance and self love don’t come easily to a lot of women. I understand this all to well. A recent study by Dove shows that 8 in 10 women feel pressure to wear their hair a certain way. For many, this is a pressure that comes at an early age. I have already seen this with my 8 year old who fusses a lot about her hair.

These last few months have been such a whirlwind for me personally. I haven’t had much of a chance to tell you about my decision this past summer to become parent and legal guardian of my 8 year old great-niece. Tati didn’t have much stability in her life, before coming to live with me. She has been through a lot. I feel so fiercely protective of her, and have such a strong desire to try and make up for any unhappiness she has had in her life. I want her to realize that she is wonderfully unique, amazing, beautiful and deserving of happiness.

I want her to know how much I love her and how important she is to me.

We have been having so much fun getting to know each other better and becoming a family these last few months. Tati is obsessed with taking selfies of us. We are by no means professional selfie takers, but we have a lot of fun with it and that’s what counts. Here we are riding Dumbo at the Magic Kingdom, snuggling on the couch, riding a ferris wheel at a local carnival, and enjoying a late summer day at the beach.

Being mom to an 8 year old girl is proving to be much different from my experiences as a boy mom. Tati is much more emotional, sensitive, and self conscious about her appearance than my son was at her age.

She often asks me why her hair is curly and not straight like mine, or why her skin is darker. I tell her that she is a beautiful mix of her mom and dad, and that she got the best of both of them. It can be hard to know just what to say in these moments. I try to keep it a fluid conversation and positively reinforce how beautiful, and smart and good she is on a regular basis. I tell her in the morning as I am brushing through her beautiful, unruly curls.

Confidence begins at home.

82% of girls learn their self-confidence from their mothers. YOU, as a mother, you hold the power to help your little girl celebrate her hair today, so that she loves it tomorrow.

Dove has put together LoveYourHair.com where you can upload a photo of your daughter, or one of both of you like I did, and then add a personal touch and share what you love about your daughter’s hair. • Love hairs..these days kids are obsessed with their appearances to an extreme extent that they actually forget everything else..always in front of mirror…but I completely understand what you have mentioned. By the way, you daughter is so cute 🙂

  • Good for you! Taking in your niece, assuming the role as mother – so brave of you and inspirational. As someone who hates their own hair, I can totally relate to your daughter (who is stunning btw Her hair is gorgeous) and this Dove campaign.

  • I think you are doing a great job of instilling good self-esteem in Tati. I agree with you, girls this age are much different than boys and it is important to teach them self-love at an early age.

  • There are a hundred different ways she can style her hair. Show her how versatile her hair is by watching some popular Youtubers style naturally curly hair. She’ll change her mind quickly and begin loving her hair.
