My Grandfather - Keep Good Going

This post brought to you by New York Life. All opinions are 100% mine.

The “My Grandfather” video really pulls at my heart strings. The video tells the story of a grandson connecting with his family heritage and roots inspired by the lessons he learned from his Grandfather and how those lessons can be carried on through the rest of his life and the next generation. The video is meaningful to me, not only because I lost my own Grandfather just a few short months ago, but because of the relationship I see between my own Son and his Grandfather, my Dad. They have such a special bond that was forged immediately when my Son was born. As Grandpa, my Dad filled a void for my Son – a father figure and strong male role model. Someone he could look up to and and learn from.

One of my Father’s greatest qualities has always been his work strong work ethic – something passed down to him from my Grandfather. He’s never shied away from a hard days work. It’s something he learned from his own Dad. This life lesson really made an impact on me growing up, and I am glad this positive effect was passed down to my Son. Hard work pays off.

I love this old pic of my son with his Grandfather.

Keep Good Going - My Grandfather

As a teenager, my boy spent many weekends under the hood of a car with his Grandpa. My Dad didn’t believe in paying someone to fix something, if he could do it himself. He shared his passion for working on cars and fixing things with my Son. He taught him a lot. Skills that not only came in handy when something brakes, but propelled my son into his career.

This ability to fix things and be self sufficient goes way back with my family. I remember how much I loved visiting the flea market with my Grandfather, as a kid. He liked picking up things that other people viewed as broken or trash, and turning them into something useful again.

It’s neat to realize the wisdom, lessons, and traits we pass on through the generations.

  • This is a really touching video. I’m very fortunate to still have my great grandma around, she’s 91 and still in great health, both physically and mentally. I’m going to sit down with her and film a video interview of WW2 stories and just general life questions.

  • I really wish my kids had a closer relationship with their grandparents but we live so far away it is hard. You bring up a very important point!

  • That’s such an adorable baby and grandfather picture! My grandpa was an awesome guy. He was a farmer and a super hard worker, but always fun to be around and cared about all his grandchildren a lot.

  • I never knew my paternal grandparents and my maternal grandfather (who I was very close to) died when I was 12. My maternal grandmother has since passed, too, so my son never knew any of his great grandparents. I tell my son about my maternal grandparents all the time.

  • This is a great post. I think all parents and grand parent try to pass on the good. I know that my grandfather spent a ton of time with us kids. He taught us all kinds of things that we have used in life.

  • This post really hits home since my grandpa died back in December. I hope the great qualities and values he and my grandmother passed on to me will continue in the generations to come!
