As a Mom and Grandma, I know that I play a direct role in my family’s health and wellbeing. The decisions I make and the example I set impact them greatly. That’s heavy stuff. I want to be someone my family can always count on, and look up to. I want to be their hero. That’s one of the reasons I’m excited to partner with the LISTERINE® brand to talk about developing heroic habits.
How far am I willing to go to build Heroic Habits for my family?
Eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, staying active, and practicing good oral health care all contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Keeping my family active is something I have to consciously work at. I have never been the most athletic person. In order to lead by example, I have to push myself to stay active – even when it doesn’t feel so good at first.
With the cooler weather upon us it’s normal for me to want to hunker down inside, so I have been working on some ideas to keep the family active this Fall.
Ways to Keep the Family Active in Cooler Weather
Start a family sports night. Instead of movie night, have a family sports night. A friendly game of basketball would be perfect. Include Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins for a game of softball. Instead of sitting around the television watching football, you could get outside and play a family friendly game of flag football.
Go for a hike. Here in Georgia we have acres and acres of pine forest that are perfect for hiking. Grandma Laura doesn’t ride behind in the E-Z-Go anymore! State parks are another great place to hiking. Plan a nature scavenger hunt before you go.
Implement a post-dinner walk or bike ride. It doesn’t need to be long, but just a 30 minute walk or bike ride after dinner a few times a week can do a lot of good.
Play dance video games. If the weather simply doesn’t permit you to go outdoors, dance video games for Wii and Xbox 360 can be a lot of fun. Get competitive or choose a popular line dance that will encourage the whole family to participate. It’s so fun to have three generations of my family playing dance games together.
Go apple picking or pumpkin patching. Apple picking is a great way for kids to learn more about where the healthy snack comes from, and get some outdoor exercise in the process. Visit an actual pumpkin patch to pick out your Fall pumpkins. It’s also a great way to start a new Fall tradition. We have some wonderful farms and orchards here in Georgia.
There are many ways to sneak in a little more activity. I’ll be working hard, pushing myself, and going that extra mile to make sure my family stays active this Fall.
Just like I work hard for my family, so does LISTERINE® TOTAL CARE. They offer products that make healthy habits simple.
How far are you willing to go to build Heroic Habits for your family? Will you be sneaking veggies into your kid’s favorite foods, or maybe changing the Wifi password every day until chores are done?
