Our Trip on The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

Mom and I enjoyed a much needed girls getaway to the Blue Ridge Mountains a couple of weeks ago. The highlight of our trip was a ride on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. This was the first time either of us had been on a train. What could be better than a train ride through the mountains to see the beautiful fall leaves!

Our trip started off a little rough, since we got lost on our way to Blue Ridge and lost almost an hour and a half of our travel time. We were very concerned that we would miss our train. Making it in the nick of time, we picked up our tickets and boarded the train. A sense of calm instantly set it. Once the train began moving, all the worries of the morning drifted away. We sat in an open air train car, so that I could get some pictures. The weather was perfect.

We went on what the Blue Ridge Railway calls the ‘Fall Leaf Excursion’, which runs during the month of October. The name did not disappoint. The fall leaves in Blue Ridge were much more vibrant and colorful than where we live. The mountain sides were covered in the colors of magenta, orange and yellow. It was quite breath taking. Our trip lasted 4 hours, including a 2 hour layover in the quaint border towns of McCaysville, Georgia and Copperhill, Tennessee. The line separating the two states runs right through the heart of town. We had a nice lunch at the Pearly Gates Cafe and did a bit of shopping while there.

The train ride takes you along a serene river, with views of the mountains, and beautiful mountain top homes. The ride was 29 miles round trip and we truly did not want it to come to an end. The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway offers a variety of trips year round. In the warmer months, there is even a trip that drops you off in McCaysville and then you take an inter-tube up the river ride back to Blue Ridge. I definitely want to go back and do this one!
