Reusing Everyday Waste by Reusing Coffee Grounds for Gardening

With Earth Day quickly approaching, my family has been working on ways to help the environment by reusing some of our everyday waste. We’ve already been doing a pretty good job at recycling and cutting back on the amount of trash we produce. For example, instead of purchasing bottled water we have been using a filtered water pitcher. But there is still so much more that we can do. Through the P&G Every Day Effect Program I was challenged to find more ways that my family can make a difference to help the environment through our every day actions. I’d like to share just a few of the ways we are reusing everyday waste.

Reusing Everyday Waste by Reusing Coffee Grounds in the Garden

The warm weather and sunshine of Spring is finally here, and I was excited to get outside and work on my patio herb garden earlier this week. When re-potting my new parsley and cilantro plants, I worked the used coffee granules from the mornings pot of coffee into the soil. Used coffee granules are a fabulous source of organic matter, rich in nitrogen, also providing magnesium, calcium, potassium, and other trace minerals to help plants grow.

Reusing Everyday Waste

When grocery shopping, I bring my reusable shopping bags. But I still end up with some plastic bags from places like the pet store or mall. A great way to re-purpose is to use plastic bags as a liner for small waste cans, like the one in your office or in the bathrooms. I can’t believe I used to purchase small trash bags for this purpose. Plastic shopping bags are also great for cleaning up after your pets, and if you have enough of them they can be used in place of packing peanuts when you send packages.

Reusing Everyday Waste by Turning Old Shirts into Rags

Old socks and stained or worn t-shirts can be cut up and used as rags. This pink t-shirt was one of my favorites for the longest time, and has served me well. The decal is coming off and a couple of holes have shown up, so it’s not worth donating to the Red Cross or Salvation Army. I went ahead and cut it up, and was able to get eight generously sized rags out of it. They have come in handy for dusting and cleaning up everyday messes.

These are just a few of the ways that my family has responded to the P&G Everyday Effect challenge. I would love your help in coming up with more ways that we can reduce and reuse everyday items! What are your suggestions for reusing everyday waste?
