Sponged Painted Easter Egg Craft

This is a great process art Easter egg craft that can be done by kids of all ages and won't have your worrying about spilled egg dye.

Do your kids want to color Easter eggs long before Easter? Or do you have a toddler and the thought of placing an open cup of dye in front of her/him sends you in a panic?

This sponge painted Easter egg craft can be done well in advance of the holiday. While your kids may end up wearing some paint, you won’t need to worry about them dying themselves with spilled dye.

  • Easter Egg(free printable template)
  • Paint
  • Sponges (the Dollar Tree is a great place to buy sponges if you have one near)
  • Clothespins (check the Dollar Tree if you have one near)
  • Scissors
  • White card stock

Notes on supplies: I always use card stock when doing painting type crafts with the kids, because it’s thicker and will adsorb the gabs of paint that may end up on the craft.

This craft takes just a little prep and set up.

1. Print the Easter Egg.

2. Make your sponge painters by cutting a sponge into smaller pieces. Use a clothespin to grasp the pieces. You want enough of the sponge sticking out of the clothespin to dip into the paint.

3. Put a small amount of paint onto a dish. We used 5 different colors.

4. Instruct your kids to dip the clothespin sponge painters into paint and then dab onto the egg.

5. Once the Easter egg is dry, cut it out.

Note: If you don’t have clothespins, just cut longer strips of sponge, so kids will have something to grasp.
