Here in Florida hurricane season can be a stressful time for families. This is something I learned when Hurricane Irma paid us a visit in September of 2017. I decided to ride out the storm with my daughter and our dog, and my parents joined us. My home at the time had a lot of windows, so I cleared out my bedroom’s walk-in closet for a makeshift bunker. We lost power quickly, but the memory that stands out the most from that night is the sound of the wind. Then, the loud crash when the large oak tree in my front yard came down onto the garage. We were terrified.

What followed was a major cleanup and almost 4 days without electricity. Fortunately, I had stocked up on hurricane essentials at Publix ahead of the storm and we had everything we needed to get us through. That is, everything except air conditioning.

I’ve begun assembling my hurricane kit for the 2019 season and am sharing some of what I consider to be must-have supplies. Also, the terrific savings I found at Publix for hurricane essentials.

In addition to preparing a hurricane kit, it is important to know your evacuation route, sandbag locations, and where local shelters will be. If you’re a pet owner, be sure to have a carrier and current vet records on hand. For younger children, I recommend small toys or games to keep them occupied before and after the storm. The time you spend sitting at home without electricity or in a shelter can seem like an eternity. A simple deck of cards can be a life saver.

If you have to evacuate, you’ll need to bring your own essentials to a shelter, including food, water, documents, sleeping bags or air mattresses.
