Our leaves don’t usually start changing colors and falling from trees until October, which is fine by me. I love to hold on and savor summer as long as we can. I don’t look forward to the cold that will come once fall fully sets in. However, that did not hold us back from doing a fun fall tree craft. I love how the painted leaves on this fall tree craft bring the beautiful colors of fall alive.
We love painting and the kids are always excited when I pull out something other than their paintbrushes to use for painting. For this fall tree craft we traded in our paintbrushes for sponges. We love painting with sponges and have been using them a lot lately.
Supplies
- Paint (We used yellow, orange, red, and brown.)
- Brown paper
- Sponge
- Paper (This piece is what you will paint your tree on. We used blue.)
- Glue
- Scissors
Directions
1. To prep for this fall tree craft, use sharp scissors and cut long strips from your sponge. Set out the paints you will be using.
2. Cut a trunk for the tree from the brown paper. Glue to the paper you will be using for the to paint the tree.
3. Dab your sponge paintbrush into the paint and dab onto the tree to form fall leaves. Repeat this process until you have full tree. Allow to dry.
If your child is having trouble with the long sponges, cut a large piece off the end of the sponge. Use a clothespin and squeeze this piece of sponge, so that some of the sponge sticks out at the end for painting.

My kids would love making this tree and I have a good idea, making a Christmas tree one right now would be so much fun for the kids!
