Deciding whether or not to let our children have cell phones is a tough decision for parents. On one hand, we want them to be able to easily reach us in case of an emergency, and on the other there are potential dangers lurking when we give our kids that much unsupervised access to internet and friends. Not to mention the responsibilities associated with having a cell phone such as no texting and driving, and staying off their phones while at school and after bedtime. My son got his first cell phone at age fourteen, and my nieces and nephews who are young teens also have them. Fortunately, I’ve discovered Sprint Guardian service which is safely connecting families like mine.
Sprint Guardian is a bundled app service for it’s family-plan customers using Android phones. Using both Safely apps and Lookout Mobile Security, the service enables families to protect their phone-carrying children through location checks and limits on texting while driving or at school, as well as the ability to protect their mobile devices from loss and malware. Sprint provided me with a Samsung Galaxy S3 (swoon!) and two Samsung Galaxy Victory phones to try out the Sprint Guardian services with my family. I am using the S3 as the parent phone, and the Victory as child phones. I have found all of the apps very easy to set up, and they can be controlled from the Sprint Mobile Controls web site which is super convenient.
Teens Drive Safer
With one teen driver in the family and another only a few months away, I am very happy about the Sprint Drive First feature which automatically locks your teenagers’ mobile phones when they’re traveling more than 10 mph and unlocks when they stop driving. Direct incoming calls to voicemail and silence distracting alerts while driving. This service is a must have for families with teen drivers! If you’re worried about not being able to reach your teen, the app gives the ability to add yourself to an allowed contact list.
Do you have a child who likes to chat and text with their friends all night long or talk to people online they don’t really know? I think that Facebook and other social media tools have given kids a false sense of who their real ‘friends’ are. Especially with the girls, we’ve had to keep a close eye on who tries to friend and connect with them online. Sprint Mobile Controls has been a huge help to monitor and control when the kids use their phones. With Sprint Mobile Controls you can understand your child’s talk, text and app use habits. Lock your child’s phone on demand or schedule locks – during dinner, school or late at night. Browse your child’s contacts and apps downloaded to the phone.
Where is everyone?
For real peace of mind use the Sprint Family Locator. Use it to quickly and easily locate your family members on an interactive map. Set up automatic location checks to get notified that your kids made it to school safely and on time.
The Lookout App provides access to malaware protection, phishing safety, and missing phone locator features.

Wow, this is awesome. My kids are no where near the age for a phone, but I’m hoping this is still around once they are!

I think it will still be a while till Jas gets her own phone, but it’s nice to know these features are out there.

I personally think that Sprint Guardian Service is an excellent idea, and actually wish it was used in everyone’s car, not just teens’ cars… it would certainly save a lot of lives!
That is amazing! I love that! I really love the whole driving and unable to text and forwards the phone to voicemail – that may be something hubby needs on his phone! Thanks for sharing! I will definitely remember this when my daughter gets to that age where she asks for a phone!
