I was never one to use many apps on my cell phone, until I recently upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S III from Sprint. However, my teenage grandchildren are a complete different story. They are always on their phones playing games and checking out social media. When I learned about madware, I immediately checked their phones. Sure enough, there were all sorts of pesky unwanted ads and text messages popping up. Terribly frustrated over the situation, I quickly downloaded the Norton Spot app onto all of our phones, and so far it’s doing a fantastic job of keeping the madware at bay. If you’re not familiar with madware (aggressive mobile adware), it uses aggressive techniques to place advertising in your Android device’s photo albums, calendar entries and push messages to your notification bar. It’s a problem unique to Android phones. Madware can even go so far as to replace your ringtone with an ad. Apparently madware is becoming a real problem for Android users; Norton recently analyzed 1.5 million apps and saw a 210 percent increase in the number of apps including madware.

The SolutionNorton Spot is Norton’s app solution for madware. Norton Spot is an ad detector and scanner of advertising networks that can spam your device via apps you install. It’s a free app and available to download from the Google Play app store for Android devices.

Norton Spot helps you identify apps that don’t respect your privacy and remove them. Surprisingly, many popular apps contain madware – with these seemingly harmless downloads can come madware (mobile adware) and it proves to be the Trojan Horse of Android’s security. Linking itself to common apps like Angry Birds, Sam’s Club and Flashlight, madware gains access to your personal information, location, settings, and frequently delivers advertising inappropriately.

There are some other things you can do to protect yourself from madware.   • This sounds really great. I get Norton free with my cable company I wonder if I could get this some how or at least a discount. Hmmm going to have to look into that! Thanks for sharing.
