It’s been another great summer of reading thanks to the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge powered by ENERGIZER®. Since we started participating in the summer reading program a few years ago, my nieces have become avid readers. This summer they discovered some books that they really enjoyed. We fought the summer brain drain and won! Now that a new school year has started, they won’t have as much time to read. But we’ll squeeze in a good book whenever we can. I am excited to partner with Scholastic to share some back to school reading tips.
We have discovered some wonderful books this summer for teens and young adults. The girls really enjoyed reading books that some of their favorite movies were based on. Scholastic asked us to share our 5 favorite book picks from this summer in “5-word book reviews”. We are having a hard time keeping our thoughts to just 5 words, but here are the girl’s brief thoughts on their favorite books.
Maddie says that “The Great Greene Heist” by Varian Johnson had many unexpected plot twists. She really enjoyed this book.
“Flowers in the Attic” by V.C. Andrews was one of Becca’s favorites. She read this after watching the movie for the first time this summer. This thrilling and sometimes scary book was also full of love.
A huge fan of books from National Geographic Kids, Maddie says “Angry Birds Space: A Furious Flight Into the Final Frontier” was just a lot of fun to read.
Both girls read “Mockingjay” the third book in the Hunger Games Trilogy. They both said the book was good but sad. They seemed to enjoy the movie more.
Becca is at that age where she is showing an interest in books that are romantic and tragic. “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green. All she can say is that she wants a boyfriend just like Augustus. Sigh. I am so not ready for that.

PREVENT THE SUMMER BRAIN DRAIN
The last few weeks of summer are notorious for the summer slide. If you have a week or two before school begins these tips from Scholastic’s Maggie McGuire will be especially helpful. She shares 5 easy tips for making reading a priority for your child, like setting a weekly minutes goal, reserving special time to read together as a family, and celebrating reading accomplishments. It’s not too late to get your kids reading.

My daughter really liked the Hunger Game series. They are very sad books though.
I loved reading as a kid, and still love it now! John Green writes amazing stories that wrench your heart out of your chest, and I have lived out so many adventures in District 12 and the Capitol thanks to the Hunger Games trilogy. Your kids have great taste in books.
There’s still plenty of time in the summer to finish some more books. Reading some book that became movies was a great idea for the program.
i love the idea of reading books that became movies. Books are always better than movies it seems that fosters the love of reading!
I think this a great progra,m. Reading is fun and full of adventure.
I have always been an avid reader, and my kids are as well. My daughter always has her nose in a book!
It’s great to see people reading during their free time. I am working on a book now!
I have always been an avid reader and I hope this is something I can pass onto my kids. Making time for reading is so important.
The scholastic book order forms were my favorite thing to bring home from school, and now I love helping J pick out a few new books from them.
I really like some of the titles you featured. Flowers In The Attic is an old favorite of mine as well and my oldest read The Fault In Our Stars over the summer too.
