Thanksgiving Traditions

Thanksgiving is a holiday that’s very deep rooted in traditions, from giving thanks to the feast. One Thanksgiving tradition that a friend of mine started with her family is a thankful tree which is similar to the grateful turkey box we had last year. I just love taking time to hear what each person is thankful for. When I was a kid it was always such a big deal to pull on the wishbone in hopes of gaining some good luck, and as far back as I can remember we’ve watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on television. I’ve always dreamed of seeing it in person one day.

Many generous folks use Thanksgiving as an opportunity to help the less fortunate. Some people volunteer to serve food at homeless shelters on Thanksgiving Day and others donate to shelters or participate in canned food drives.

Being a family of foodies, the big feast is of particular importance. Like most families, we have our favorites which are prepared year after year like the mashed potatoes and cornbread dressing. Something pumpkin for dessert is a given, although in recent years I have deviated from the traditional pumpkin pie for a pumpkin cheesecake instead. This year Mom’s Citrus and Herb Turkey is sure to be the star of the show. While we’ll always have our traditional favorites, I like to prepare something different every year just to mix things up a bit.

This year technology is playing a greater role in my Thanksgiving preparation, thanks to some really great recipe and menu planning apps. The Bing Food & Drink app has quickly become a favorite of mine. This app makes it easy to explore recipes, choose wine and cocktails, and learn tips from celebrity chefs to make your next meal a taste tempting success. There are big beautiful photos, easy to follow instructions and helpful tools such as a meal planner and shopping list. Enter notes or upload your own recipes and with a single tap you can share your favorites with friends. The Bing Food & Drink app really does have everything you will need to plan a fabulous Thanksgiving feast.
