Tips for Cold and Flu Prevention

The cold and flu season hit my family pretty hard last winter. The memories of sneezing, coughing, fever, aches and pains still linger. This year’s flu season seems to be even worse than last. So often on the evening news there is talk of another city or state being struck with a flu outbreak. This year cold and flu prevention is a priority for my family. We’re being proactive and fighting back against the cold and flu season.

So far this winter, it seems to be paying off. We have been relatively healthy. It may just be luck, but I think some of our preventative measures are actually paying off.

Tips for Cold and Flu Prevention

Tips for Cold and Flu Prevention:

If you haven’t already, the CDC recommends getting the flu vaccine.

Frequent hand washing. Wash your hands often, especially after using the bathroom or touching inanimate objects, like bathroom faucets and door handles, especially in public places. Also, try to not touch your face. Touching your face makes it easier for germs to enter your body. Be sure to always carry some hand sanitizer, and use it often. The Red Cross says that proper and consistent hand washing is one of the easiest ways to prevent the spread of flu.

Go to bed early and get plenty of rest. Being well rested will help boost your immune system.

Eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of water. A healthy diet will help keep your immune system going strong. Now is the time to put some extra vegetables onto your plate. Make sure you are getting plenty of Zinc and Vitamin C.

This is a hard one for me during the colder months. According to Everyday Health, you should do your best to keep moving. Regular exercise is another immune-system booster, which can prevent cold bugs.

This might seem obvious, but stay away from people who are sick. Likewise, if you or your child is sick stay home so you don’t spread germs.
