Valentine's Day Chocolate Covered Oreos

Valentine’s Day Chocolate Covered Oreos are a simple and scrumptious treat for friends and family. They are pretty (and pretty delicious!) and a great recipe to make with your kids!

Valentine's Day Chocolate Covered Oreos

We’ve played around with Oreos a few times before, like when we made some Patriotic Oreo Pops for the Fourth of July and the adorable Easter Chick Oreo Pops. We even transformed Oreos into Halloween spiders. I’ve quickly become a huge fan of chocolate covered Oreos. It’s one of the simplest and most scrumptious treats to make and is always a mega-hit with friends and family.

It only made sense that Oreos make an appearance for Valentine’s Day, too. My original plan was to make these into pops, but I was feeling kinda lazy when I made these and skipped the sticks altogether. I’m glad that I did, because these Valentine’s Day Chocolate-Covered Oreos without the sticks will pack nicely into treat boxes to give as gifts.

How To Melt Chocolate

You have three options, each with their own level of difficulty and risk of burning the chocolate.

  1. Microwave: The easiest option, and the option that requires the least equipment. It involves microwaving the chocolate in short intervals and stirring. It’s the quickest method, though there is the risk of microwaving for too long and burning the chocolate.
  2. Double Boiler: This is the safest method in that it won’t burn the chocolate, and is the best method if dealing with delicate chocolate or large quantities of chocolate. It involves placing the chocolate in a heatproof bowl, which then goes atop a pot of simmering water. The steam slowly melts the chocolate.
  3. Direct Heat: As the name suggests, you put the chocolate directly in a pan or skillet and put it on LOW heat on the stove, stirring constantly. It’s the quickest method, though also the riskiest.

FAQs

What kind of melting chocolate did you use?

I just used some semi-sweet chocolate pieces thinned with a little shortening.

Can I use different cookies to Oreo?

I would recommend sticking with Oreos, though it’s up to you which kind of Oreos you use. Double-stuff or Golden would also work. I believe there are mint Oreos, which might be fun to use for a St. Patrick’s Day treat.

Can I use a fork instead of a skewer?

Sure. Just tap the cookies to remove excess chocolate.

How do I prevent the cookies from smudging or melting when handled?

Put them in the fridge or after dipping them so that the shell hardens.

How To Store Chocolate-Covered Oreos

Let the chocolate shell harden completely. Put the cookies in an airtight container. You can leave them in a cool, dry place at room temperature for up to a week. They’ll last up to 2 weeks in the fridge. If you want to freeze them, feel free. Wrap them in foil or plastic before putting them in the container. They should last for up to 3 months in the freezer. The chocolate may become slightly dull or develop white spots (called “bloom”) from being stored this way. Rest assured, this doesn’t affect their taste or render them unsafe.
