Is Kindergarten the new first grade? It certainly isn’t what it use to be. Back when many of us parents went to kindergarten, there were half day sessions and lots of playtime was to be had. While there is still some playtime, today there are some skills your child is expected to have learned by the end kindergarten. Here’s what to expect from kindergarten.

According to Scholastic, these are some of the skills learned by the end of kindergarten.

  • Recognize and write all of the letters of the alphabet in upper and lower case forms
  • Learn sounds corresponding to vowels and consonants
  • Use initial consonant sounds and sound patterns to read words
  • Identify several sight words
  • Recognize and use rhyming words
  • Write his first and last name
  • Recognize and write numbers to 30
  • Count orally by ones, fives and tens
  • Add and subtract using manipulatives
  • Use graphs to gather information
  • Recognize patterns and shapes
  • Tell time to the nearest hour
  • Recite the days of the week and months of the year

Curriculum varies from school to school, but what you can expect from kindergarten is focus on building pre-reading skills, practicing letter formation, enhanced listening and communication skills, and getting an introduction to basic math.
