Fall is a time of year when we actually enjoy all sorts of creepy crawlies. From spooky spider pops to paper bats, Halloween is oddly a time when we embraces these creatures, that would otherwise be considered a nuisance. What if you had a problem with spiders or some other creepy crawly in your home? During these cooler months, pests are trying to enter our homes to seek shelter from the cold. Suddenly, they are no longer so cute!
Last fall my family had our own real life Halloween horror. In early October we started hearing something up in the attic, but passed it off as a squirrel. Then one evening while I was on the side of the yard with our dogs, bats started swooping down at us from the attic vent. It seemed like an eternity as one by one the little creatures flew out of my house. It turned out that we had a bat colony 500+ strong, who had taken our attic as their new home. It was quite removal and clean up project that required pest control specialists, and I have to say that I will never be comfortable seeing a bat again. Not even the cute Halloween decorations that are all over the place this time of year.
This year we have an all new problem with pests. The daddy long leg spiders are here and there are a LOT of them. I realize they are harmless pests, but when 25 of them are around the back door trying to get inside it’s an issue for me. I’ve been out with my can of bug spray trying to keep them at bay, but it doesn’t seem to be working. I think it’s time to call the professionals again.
I wonder what it will be next fall… ants, roaches, or termites maybe. I guess it’s the price we pay for living out in the woods.

I have a high tolerance for snakes, lizards, spiders…but bats..not! That would have me a bit “batty”! lol Seriously – That would have been horrible for my family for I’d freaked out a bit.

Bats! That is horrible!! I have never heard of such a thing!! That is awful!! I am so glad that is over. They carry diseases for sure!! I have raccoons. They come through our cat and dog doors and eat our food in the kitchen. My dogs have been to the vets 3 times now. I was bitten too trying to stop them from killing my little dog. They are Bichons and they still will chase them. This happens during the day. They have gotten so bold. I have to shut the doors but then I have 3 cats so I try to leave one open. Crazy!!
That is so scary about the raccoons. We have a Bichon also and he will definitely chase the animals.
We just finished battling sugar ants, but we were able to get rid of them with a combination of sugar water and borax!
Sugar and Borax has worked for me also!
Wow I don’think I could handle having either in my house.
