Banana Dogs — peeled banana nestled in a hot dog bun atop peanut butter and jam — is a treat for you and your kids. They’ll love the taste, you’ll love how easy it is to make. With protein, carbs, and fat, Banana Dogs are a great way for your family to start the day.

On our recent trip to Great Wolf Lodge we stopped into the Bear Paw Sweets & Eats shop. I was so intrigued by the Banana Dog listed on the menu. We didn’t order any banana dogs that day, but I knew it was something I would be making at home.

I love it when the family gets excited about something that is so easy to prepare. This morning for breakfast we had banana dogs and this recipe only required four ingredients.

Spread some peanut butter and jelly over the hot dog bun and place a peeled banana into the center. The banana dog was a huge hit this morning and it would also be great as a snack or for lunch.

Ingredients

  • whole grain hot dog buns
  • bananas
  • peanut butter
  • jam or jelly

Instructions

Step 1: Spread some peanut butter and jelly over the hot dog bun and place a peeled banana into the center. The banana dog was a huge hit this morning and it would also be great as a snack or for lunch.

Step 2: Enjoy!

Variations

If you’ve ever been to France, you’ll be familiar with the country’s sweet crepes, many of which feature banana. If you think of these as Americanized crepes, you’ll quickly come up with different ways to make them. For instance, substitute Nutella and shaved coconut for the peanut butter and jam. Or pour honey on the banana as you would ketchup on a hot dog. Or marshmallow fluff. Or granola. You could also keep the peanut butter but substitute chocolate chips for the jam for that something sweet. Or get rid of the banana altogether and put sliced apple and peanut butter in there. If you would like something savory, try cream cheese and banana. Or line the bun with cooked bacon for that exquisite salty/sweet mix.

What kind of peanut butter did you use?

We went with crunchy but this is really a matter of preference. All-natural, almond… I doubt you can go wrong.

This is good – got a ittlle bit of everything here – whole grain, proteins, carbs, fats – This is an easy way to trick those, “Mom, I don’t want breakfast” kids into not only HAVING breakfast, but enjoying it, too.
