Be Smart. Be Kind. Danielle, Chronicles of a Superheroine

My daughter decided when she was seven that she wants to be a space scientist when she grows up, and hopes to work for NASA one day. She is a dreamer who loves gazing up at the stars at night, and gets excited whenever there is a rocket launch at Kennedy Space Center or an eclipse to witness. She’s also a very compassionate child who feels so much for those who are hurting or less fortunate and wants to help. There’s so much imagination, hope and love in her. I see her as a bright light in what can sometimes be a dark world.

As a parent, I want to do everything in my power to encourage and empower her to do the things she dreams of. I don’t see any reason why she can’t be an astronomer or astrophysicist or even an astronaut one day. I want to lead by example, and show her that there are things she can do to help people in need. Things she can do right now as a 10-year old.

There have been occasions when my little girl has doubted herself and her abilities to do the things that she dreams about. Sometimes she’ll says she isn’t good enough at math to be a scientist. It is really hard to see her doubt herself, especially when I have all the faith in the world in her.

I was recently given a sneak peak at an upcoming new novel from Wordfire Press, Danielle, Chronicles of a Superheroine by author, inventor, and futurist Ray Kurzweil. This book is a great inspiration and encouragement for kids to do dream big and be kind, and I’m excited to share my thoughts with you. The book comes with two companion books (How You Can Be a Danielle, and A Chronicle Of Ideas) that offer additional ways to experience Danielle’s story.

Danielle is a clever girl who uses her smarts and technology to solve some of the world’s biggest challenges. Her journey is hopeful and encouraging, and the perfect example for your young girls (and boys) with a passion for science and technology and a heart for people.

Written as an alternative history, Danielle’s journey as a driven young girl brings her face to face with many important figures from recent history and our modern world.

I’m so glad I made the decision to read this book together with my daughter. It has inspired some great discussion and ideas as we’ve read through both the book and the companion book A Chronicle Of Ideas: A Guide For Superheroines (And Superheroes).

From early on in the story, as told by Danielle’s sister, Claire, a girl adopted from Haiti after surviving an earthquake, it is obvious that there isn’t anything average about Danielle. Everything Danielle did was done with purpose. Even as a baby, Danielle was slow to walk and talk until, as her father pointed, she had something to do and something to say. Boy did she ever when she was finally ready.

The book takes you year by year through the first 22 years of Danielle’s life, before moving on to “Ways You Can Be a Danielle.” During those 22 years you see Danielle travel the world and accomplish so much. Danielle finds success as a humanitarian, activist, change maker, award winning musician, peacemaker, Nobel Peace Prize winner, world leader and so much more.

Danielle is very intelligent girl who is also kind and compassionate, taking on challenges like helping to bring water to the people of Zambia. This she did at the age of six. I told you Danielle is an exceptional girl!

I love how Danielle’s adventures have inspired my 10-year old to dream big, and helped her to see that she isn’t too young or insignificant to make a real difference.

From a parents perspective, it was interesting to see the freedoms that Danielle’s parents gave her. I’m somewhat of a helicopter mom, so it was hard for me to imagine letting my young child fly off to another country without me. I did feel like Danielle’s mom and dad did an amazing job of giving Danielle and Claire encouragement and the freedom needed to realize and accomplish whatever they put their minds to. Some food for thought.
