Fabric Flip Flops DIY

The girls and I have been on a bit of a flip flop DIY kick lately. It all started with some ribbon flip flops we made for the 4th of July holiday and then some festive water balloon flip flops that we made last week. I have a few more DIY flop flop ideas in the hopper still, but these simple fabric flops are my latest creation. Hopefully, we’ll have them all done in the next couple of weeks and I’ll put a roundup together for you.

This flip flop DIY couldn’t be any simpler and can easily be accomplished in less than 30 minutes. The best part is that there is no sewing involved. All you need is an inexpensive pair of flip flops (can easily be found this time of the year for $1 or less), some scrap fabric, and a pair of scissors.

Please excuse the sloppy nail paint in these pictures. We ran out of nail polish remover while my granddaughters were painting their nails this morning.

Supplies:

scrap fabric (about 1/4 yard)
flip flops
scissors

1. Cut your fabric. You will need four 4½ x 24 inch strips.

2. Cut and remove the strap from your flip flops. I used my all-purpose crafting scissors for this and they worked great.

3. Use your scissors to cut a tip into the end of each fabric strip (like shown in the picture below).

4. Next, take two strips and pull two ends through the hole at the toe.

5. Tie a double knot – make it good and tight. It might take a little maneuvering, but the knot will fit in the little divet left from the original straps. Cut the ends off.

6. Turn the flop over. Holding both the straps together, you are going to tie one knot about an inch from the shoe. This is where it will go in between your toes, with the knot resting just above and between your first two toes.

7. Just above the first knot, tie a second knot. Again, make the knot good and tight.

8. Next, pull the two straps through each of the side holes. You’ll want to use your foot as a guide at this point. Put the flip flop on and tighten the strap to where it is tight on the top of your foot, then tie a knot on each side. Remove the shoe from your foot and make sure that the knots are good and tight. Snip off the ends.

Try the shoe on to check the fits. And that’s it – you’re done! Can you believe how simple these were to make?
