Paper Bag Scarecrow Hat - DIY Halloween Costume

Here’s a super easy and inexpensive way to dress up your kids for Halloween! Just add a flannel shirt and some patched up jeans to this paper bag scarecrow hat, for a complete scarecrow costume. This would even be a fun craft project to do if your child is reading about Tom Sawyer or Huckleberry Finn.

This actually cost me nothing to make, because I used scraps that I already had. If you don’t have a paper grocery bag, some brown shipping paper would do just fine.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Brown Paper Bag
Straw or Rattan
Glue
Scissors
Masking Tape
Ball or bowl the size of your head
Scraps of material & trim

For the trim, I used a piece of black paper streamer and scraps of brown and yellow felt. You could use any fabric or craft paper you happen to have on hand. I also tucked in a couple of feathers.

Directions: Split bag open and place centered over ball or inverted bowl. Press paper with hands around top half of ball to shape. Hold it in place while second person wraps large pieces of tape around to make hat band. Remove from ball or bowl.

Using our picture as reference for decorating your own scarecrow hat.

Thanks to FreeKidsCrafts.com for sharing this fun idea with us.

Wow, this is easy enough! It reminds me of the hat my dad made for my cousin in daycamp. Very similar – she won 1st prize, and the hat he made for ME won nothing. I was mad!
