If you would have asked me 6 years ago when my oldest son was born if I was going to use cloth diapers I probably would have laughed in your face! Back then, my only opinion of cloth diapers was that they were those Gerber Prefolds that I use for burp rags that you put on with pins and cover up with some plastic underwear! If only I had known then just how wrong I was, and how much money it would have saved me!
When I was pregnant with my third child in 2010, one of my co-workers asked me if I had looked into using cloth diapers. I was still VERY skeptical but being more mature and knowing much more than I did 6 years ago, I decided to at least look into. I was shocked at what I found!
A modern cloth diaper is not much different than a disposable diaper, and they are just as easy to use. For me the biggest selling point, even more so than the money savings, because let’s face it I’m addicted and spend WAY more than I should on cloth diapers, was that I wouldn’t be putting all the gross chemicals next to my babies bum 24/7.
I can honestly say that I am addicted to cloth diapers! In fact cloth diapers are why I started to blog! I wanted to be able to share my addiction with the world (or at least everyone that takes the time to read what I write).
I will admit that using cloth diapers is not all glitz and glamor. Even though at times I might make it sound like it is. Especially if I am trying to convert a friend! You do have to rinse all solid waste out of the diaper (but you really should be doing this with disposables too, read the package), and yes I have to wash them ever few days. Sometimes they stink really bad! Even after they have been cleaned and finding a wash routine that worked for us and our EXTREMELY hard water was NOT easy! But in the long run it was and is well worth the investment of time and money. Even on those days when I’m just not sure I want to do it any more I take a look at Colton’s little fluff covered bum and my heart just melts!
My name is Cristina and I am addicted to Cloth Diapers! Join me in my addiction. Tell me what is holding you back? Already addicted like me? How severe is your addiction?
Wow, I never heard that you are supposed to rinse the waste out of disposables. eeek!
The main drawback for me was daycare. It just wasn’t an option to use cloth at daycare, and I guess at home I was just too lazy. Thinking about the chemicals should have deterred me though.
My name is Shannon (aka The Green Mommy) and I am addicted to Cloth Diapers, too! When pregnant, I remember saying that I wold be willing to give cloth a try, but all I knew were the Gerber prefolds. I THOUGHT I would be able to figure out how to use them on my own, pins and all. Didn’t I see it on a cartoon from my childhood somewhere? Yeah, that lasted about one change. “Fortunately” my daughter ended up becoming allergic to the chemicals in the disposable diapers, and by her 6th month, we were in cloth diapers full time (the REAL ones). Her chemicals burns healed and I never looked back.
How severe is my addiction? Come to one of my Cloth Diaper 101 classes and I’ll show you! 😀
Great post! Ive gone back and forth with cloth diapers between my three kids. With my third we ended up in an apartment without our own washer/dryer, that was the end for me. I just can’t wash diapers in the tub/sink etc. It is a great option though!
When my kids were younger i had three in cloth diapers all under the age of 3. It was alot of work, but worth it on the money i saved!
I got addicted to cloth after using both disposables and cloth together. I have trouble with the washing though.
I used cloth diapers on my 3 children. It saved me lots of money!
I used disposables with my first child and then cloth with my second. I wanted to save money and had a nice friend who lent me a variety of types to try out before deciding on what I wanted to get. It can be overwhleming with the different types and brands of cloth diapers, that’s for sure. I started off with just cloth during the day at home. Eventually I started using cloth at night too. And finally, I started using cloth outside the home too. I even used cloth on a little out of town/overnight trip!
Traveling would probably deter me. Glad to hear it’s doable!
Thanks to your post I would consider using them!
